Important topics during the professional development included school policies and procedures, Covid-19 mitigation guidelines, student affairs, how to effectively communicate with parents, child protection seminars, and the Student Council Officer\u2019s presentation on promoting mental wellness in the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>Acting MCS president Frances Taimanao shared the importance of the event stating, \u201cIt is crucial that before the start of the school year, we promote a unified understanding of the school\u2019s policies, procedures, and protocols. These last two days are meant to engage and support teachers as they prepare to welcome their students and families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ninth-grade homeroom teacher Jonathan Sanchez said, \u201cThe professional development events were very helpful. While this isn\u2019t my first year as a teacher at MCS, the presentations were a helpful refresher and I was happy we got a chance to engage with student leaders prior to the start of the new school year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Second grade homeroom teacher Felisa Mendiola shared the impact Mount Carmel School\u2019s student council officers made with their topic focused on mental health. \u201cMy greatest take away from our professional development was when [the Student Council] actually came to talk to us about mental health awareness and how they would like to focus on its importance among our students and each other. I plan to utilize some of the methods and activities STUCO provided us with to foster social and emotional learning and improve and promote proper mental health in the classroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The first day of classes for Mount Carmel School is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 12, 2021.
