Palomo Guam Museum &#038; Educational Facility in Hag\u00e5t\u00f1a.\u00a0(UNIVERSITY OF GUAM CENTER FOR ISLAND SUSTAINABILITY)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The University of Guam is one of 11 universities to win a 2021 Excellence and Innovation Award from the American Association of State Colleges and Universities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0UOG Center for Island Sustainability received the\u00a0Sustainability and Sustainable Development Award\u00a0for\u00a0facilitating climate and sustainability solutions in the community through the island-wide\u00a0Guam Green Growth (G3) Initiative.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo receive one of 11 awards among the association\u2019s membership of 400 public colleges\u00a0and universities is quite telling that we\u2014as a university and as an island\u2014are not only effectively leading our community in sustainability solutions, but we\u2019re setting an example nationwide,\u201d said UOG president Thomas W. Krise.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>AASCU president and CEO Mildred Garc\u00eda said the UOG Center for Island Sustainability was selected by the awards committee \u201cfor its outstanding results and potential to influence and serve as a model for other institutions.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Guam Green Growth is an islandwide initiative to locally implement the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. It is the most comprehensive public-private partnership ever created achieve a sustainable future for Guam.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Center for Island Sustainability has facilitated the initiative, which brought together 99 individuals from all sectors of society appointed through Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero\u2019s Executive Order 2019-23. The working group members developed an \u201cAction Framework\u201d that was formally adopted by the governor in September 2020 and\u00a0now guides implementation of the 17 U.N. Sustainable Development Goals in locally and culturally effective ways.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u201cGuam Green Growth is a remarkable partnership between all sectors of our society to create a sustainable future for our island,\u201d the governor said. \u201cCongratulations to the University of Guam for this distinct and well-deserved honor as the facilitators of this islandwide movement.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Austin Shelton, director of the Center for Island Sustainability and co-chair of the G3 Steering Committee, said this is an award for the working group members from the community as well, who took a personal interest in the island\u2019s future and dedicated their time and expertise to creating this plan.\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u201cThanks to all the dedicated G3 Working Group members and supporters,\u201d Shelton said. \u201cGuam is demonstrating that we are a global leader in island sustainability.
