{"id":351629,"date":"2021-09-14T06:00:18","date_gmt":"2021-09-13T20:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=351629"},"modified":"2021-09-14T06:00:18","modified_gmt":"2021-09-13T20:00:18","slug":"nmc-student-body-elects-new-officers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/nmc-student-body-elects-new-officers\/","title":{"rendered":"NMC student body elects new officers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/nmc-student-officers.jpg\" alt=\"NMC student body elects new officers\" width=\"600\" height=\"155\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-351630\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Northern Marianas College students recently elected new officers to the college\u2019s student government body, or the Associated Students of NMC.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The new officers are: Alyssa Attao, president; Gerald Crisostomo Jr., vice president; Jefferson Cunanan, secretary; Duncan Laxa, treasurer; and Maritoni Duarte and Eloise Lopez, senators.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am honored to have been chosen to serve the students of the Northern Marianas College as president,\u201d said Attao, a 20-year-old education major in her fourth year at NMC and elected to the ASNMC board as treasurer back in 2020.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would like to thank all the NMC students who have trusted me to represent them,\u201d Attao added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Crisostomo, a 22-year-old freshman business major, said he is excited to serve this term as vice president. \u201cI feel honored that the students of NMC have chosen me to represent them,\u201d Crisostomo said. \u201cI will work hard to ensure that NMC always has the best interests of students in mind in every decision the college makes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cunanan, a 19-year-old Liberal Arts major freshman, said he is happy with the results of the election. \u201cIt feels really gratifying to know that the students of NMC entrusted me with such a big responsibility,\u201d Cunanan said. \u201cIt is a big responsibility to take on, but I am ready and willing to do my best as [the students\u2019] ASNMC secretary.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cunanan also thanked his supervisors, Alexis Manglona and Maia Pangelinan, for encouraging him to run.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Laxa, the newly-elected student body treasurer, is a 20-year-old business major who has been taking classes at NMC for more than two years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThroughout the [election] process, I was excited but also very nervous,\u201d Laxa said. \u201cI believe that the outcome of the election gave me a great opportunity for me to challenge myself and improve my leadership skills.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Laxa thanks his constituents for supporting him in this election, and thanks Michaela Gatdula for encouraging him to step out of his comfort zone.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Incoming ASNMC senator Duarte said she is honored to have been elected to the student government body. \u201cI am excited to start working with my ASNMC colleagues to begin representing our fellow students,\u201d Duarte said.<\/p>\n<p>A 29-year-old business major, Duarte has been at NMC for more than nine years. She has received a liberal arts degree and nursing degree from the college.\u00a0<br \/>\n\u201cI would like to thank all the students of NMC who voted and made their voices heard,\u201d Duarte added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lopez, a re-elected senator, said she is excited to serve this term. \u201cThe journey starts here and I am excited to see what we can offer to all our students as student leaders of NMC,\u201d Lopez said. \u201cI am excited to distribute the ideas that we will create together and I believe that the team that we have will do bigger and greater things!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lopez is a 23-year-old natural resource management and elementary education major at the college.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to thank my family for believing in me once more again to be a part of our next ASNMC cohort, my friends from the states and here for continued to help me spread the awareness, my work staff for encouraging to apply, and overall\u2014the continuous support of the students at the Northern Marianas College,\u201d Lopez added.<\/p>\n<p>ASNMC is a student-driven governance body at the college.
