{"id":353889,"date":"2021-10-18T06:00:08","date_gmt":"2021-10-17T20:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=353889"},"modified":"2021-10-18T06:00:08","modified_gmt":"2021-10-17T20:00:08","slug":"oia-awards-8-5m-for-energy-initiatives-in-us-territories","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/oia-awards-8-5m-for-energy-initiatives-in-us-territories\/","title":{"rendered":"OIA awards $8.5M for energy initiatives in US territories"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cEnergy costs in the territories are among the highest in the nation,\u201d said deputy assistant secretary Keone Nakoa. \u201cWe are pleased to provide support for these initiatives that help drive down the costs and promote cleaner energy options, a priority in the Biden-Harris administration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Energizing Insular Communities grants for fiscal year 2021 total $8.5 million and have been awarded to various projects in each of the U.S. territories as follows:<\/p>\n<p>American Samoa<\/p>\n<p>American Samoa Shipyard Services Authority &#8211; $360,000 for solar photovoltaic and battery energy storage system<\/p>\n<p>American Samoa Telecommunications Authority &#8211; $670,000 for an energy-efficient chilled water HVAC system at the central office<\/p>\n<p>American Samoa Medical Center Authority &#8211; $1,000,000 for microgrid, cooling tower, and LED lighting retrofit projects<\/p>\n<p><strong>Guam <\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 Guam Power Authority &#8211; $154,526 for LED lighting upgrades at the Tamuning Elementary School<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 GPA &#8211; $1,291,938 for LED lighting upgrades, air-cinditioning central control upgrades, and a solar photovoltaic system at the University of Guam<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 University of Guam &#8211; $274,587 for 2023 Guam Strategy Energy and Action Plan<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Guam Community College &#8211; $475,200 for a 100-kW solar panel system<\/p>\n<p><strong>Northern Mariana Islands <\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 CNMI Department of Public Works, Division of Energy &#8211; $215,336 for the residential rebate program for Energy Efficient\/Energy Star appliances in the CNMI, second year of program<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 CNMI Ports Authority &#8211; $260,500 for cool roof and LED lighting upgrades at the Francisco C. Ada\/Saipan International Airport<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Commonwealth Utilities Corp. &#8211; $299,996 for a pilot project exploring automated electrical power distribution<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Tinian municipal government &#8211; $328,236 for the installation of solar-powered light systems on public buildings and pathways<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 CNMI Energy Task Force &#8211; $370,680 for planning and coordinating technical assistance<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 CUC &#8211; $645,000 for a 2.5MW solar photovoltaic and battery storage integrated facility design<\/p>\n<p><strong>U.S. Virgin Islands<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority &#8211; $1 million for the procurement of hybrid and electric utility fleet vehicles and equipment.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Virgin Islands Energy Office &#8211; $1.154 million for the Government Operations Fleet Electrification and Energy Efficient Transition project<\/p>\n<p>The Energizing Insular Communities program is made available each year by Congress to support energy priorities in the U.S. territories.
