{"id":354619,"date":"2021-10-27T06:04:43","date_gmt":"2021-10-26T20:04:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=354619"},"modified":"2021-10-27T06:04:43","modified_gmt":"2021-10-26T20:04:43","slug":"exploring-micronesian-history-through-podcasts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/exploring-micronesian-history-through-podcasts\/","title":{"rendered":"Exploring Micronesian history through podcasts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>TAMUNING, Guam<\/strong>\u2014Memoirs Pasifika, a Guam-based podcast exploring events, movements, and people in modern Micronesian history, will host a virtual roundtable and audience question-and-answer to discuss the role of podcasts in sharing Micronesian history with local and global audiences.<\/p>\n<p>The online event, titled \u201cModern Micronesian History Through Podcast: A Virtual Roundtable + Q&amp;A,\u201d is free and open to the public. It will take place on Thursday,\u00a0Oct. 28, from 7:30pm to 9pm (Chamorro Standard Time). Register to attend at\u00a0http:\/\/tinyurl.com\/MemoirsPasifika.<\/p>\n<p>The roundtable discussion will be moderated by Manuel Lujan Cruz, an Instructor of Communication &amp; Media at the University of Guam. Cruz is also a UN Indigenous Fellow and former host of\u00a0Fanachu! Podcast.<\/p>\n<p>The panelists are Dr. Michael Lujan Bevacqua (curator, Guam Museum; host,\u00a0Fanachu! Podcast), Dr. Vivian Dames (associate professor of Social Work\/Women &amp; Gender Studies, UOG;\u00a0former host, KPRG\u2019s\u00a0Beyond the Fence), and Tony Azios (producer,\u00a0Memoirs Pasifika\u00a0podcast; documentary filmmaker, and journalist).<\/p>\n<p>Memoirs Pasifika\u00a0is a documentary podcast exploring events, movements, and people in modern Micronesian history. Each episode covers a different topic and is largely told through interviews with Pacific Islanders who witnessed or participated in the events in question.<\/p>\n<p>Recent episodes explore fascinating events in the region\u2019s history. For example, the\u00a0third episode\u2014anchored by Dr. Evyn L\u00ea Espiritu Gandhi\u2014discusses Operation New Life, when Guam served as the primary processing center for 112,000 Vietnamese refugees after the Fall of Saigon in April 1975. The fourth episode, anchored by former Saipan representative LJ Castro, covers several key moments and debates from the\u00a0Northern Mariana Islands\u2019 self-determination process of the \u201960s and \u201970s, including\u00a0the Marianas Political Status Commission\u2019s negotiations with the United States government to end the CNMI\u2019s status as a U.S.-administered Trust Territory through the Covenant Agreement. It features interviews with several framers of the Covenant, including Vicente Naputi Santos, Manuel Atalig Sablan, and Pedro Agulto Tenorio.<\/p>\n<p>A sixth episode, about the revival of traditional seafaring practices in the Marianas with the help of Carolinian navigators, will be released this week.<\/p>\n<p>The podcast is available for download and streaming across multiple sites, including\u00a0Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon\/Audible, SoundCloud, Libsyn, and\u00a0YouTube.
