The U.S. Department of\u00a0Transportation\u2019s Federal Aviation Administration will award $110,000 for the Pagan airstrip, as part of the estimated $6 million the FAA will award to the Northern Mariana Islands from funding\u00a0made available by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.<\/p>\n
According to a U.S. Department of\u00a0Transportation news release last Friday, it said that the following Northern Mariana Islands airports are estimated to receive funding during the first year of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law:\u00a0<\/p>\n
– Pagan Airstrip\u00a0in Shomu-Shon: $110,000\u00a0<\/p>\n
– Benjamin Taisacan Manglona International\u00a0on Rota:\u00a0 $1,007,374\u00a0<\/p>\n
– Tinian International\u00a0on Tinian:\u00a0 $1,026,751\u00a0<\/p>\n
– Francisco C. Ada\/Saipan International\u00a0Airport on Saipan:\u00a0 $3,873,026\u00a0<\/p>\n

The FAA news release stated that the money can be invested in runways, taxiways, safety and sustainability projects, as well as terminal, airport-transit connections and roadway projects. This is the first of five annual rounds of funding CNMI airports will receive.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Bipartisan Infrastructure Law has given us a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build safer and more sustainable airports that connect individuals to jobs and communities to the world,\u201d\u00a0said\u00a0U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.\u00a0\u201cWith this new funding, urban, regional and rural airports across the country now can get to work on projects that have waited for years, modernizing their infrastructure and building a better America.\u201d<\/p>\n
CNMI airports can submit projects\u00a0they wish to use the funds on\u00a0for FAA review in the coming weeks. The FAA encourages airports to prioritize projects that increase airport safety, equity and sustainability. The agency also plans to conduct outreach with the minority business community on these opportunities at airports across the nation.
\nThe money comes from the Airport Infrastructure Grant program, one of three new aviation programs created by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The law provides $15 billion over five years for this program. The FAA estimates the backlog of airport modernization and safety projects totals $43.6 billion.
