Orrin Pharmin is getting back to form and proved it by winning the men\u2019s 400m of the local Oceania Virtual Championships held last Dec. 20 at the Oleai track and field.<\/p>\n

Pharmin topped the run around the full oval in a flat minute to beat Theo Rodgers (1:00.6) and Edward Dela Cruz Jr. (1:50).<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been off for three years now and I\u2019m back. I just started training in 2021 to help represent the CNMI track and field team in the Pacific Mini Games that we are hosting this year,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He said going back to the sport he loves was a real struggle.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was tough when I first started training, getting myself in shape, etc. and it is still tough, especially in this pandemic. But I\u2019m still trying my best to get in top shape and hopefully improve on my overall performance, especially for the Mini Games.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pharmin said training and competing in this era of COVID-19 has its pros and cons.<\/p>\n

\u201cAside from protocols, running virtually is different. I feel less pressure compared to having my competitors from the different islands and countries physically present, but either way, it is based on our times. I still need to keep that in mind whenever I\u2019m running in these virtual events,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He also admitted that his performance in the Dec. 20 event would also help determine what areas of his run needs to be tweaked.<\/p>\n

\u201cWinning this run is a good benchmark in letting me know where I\u2019m at in reference to my time and what I need to do in order to improve on my times, especially for Mini Games. I dedicate every run and event to first and foremost God, then my son, Darrion Joseph Pharmin, but this run was also for those we lost this year during this pandemic crisis,\u201d said Pharmin.<\/p>\n

He also mentioned his sponsor, Latte Built Fitness, as one of his biggest supporters and Northern Marianas Athletics for continuing to stage running events despite the pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cAside from my coaches, families, and NMA, Latte Built has been there for me since Day 1 of my training journey for the Mini Games,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The rest of the events for last Dec. 20\u2019s local Oceania Virtual Championships will be reported in tomorrow\u2019s issue of Saipan Tribune.<\/p>\n

Last October, Oceania Athletics announced it will be conducting its regional championships online through the 2021 Oceania Athletics Virtual Championships.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the world, and especially the Pacific feeling the effects of the global COVID-19 pandemic, it has meant that it is now, over two years, since we have been able to gather as an Oceania Athletics family in person,\u201d said Oceania Athletics.<\/p>\n

It said the 2021 Oceania Athletics Virtual Championships would allow athletes of all ages and abilities to compete, albeit virtually, for medals and to be crowned Oceania Virtual Champion.<\/p>\n

The 2021 Oceania Athletics Virtual Championships was held in partnership with Oceania Masters Athletics Association and will see champions crowned and medals awarded across multiple age groups, from under 14 to 80 years of age.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
