{"id":363053,"date":"2022-02-28T06:02:57","date_gmt":"2022-02-27T20:02:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=363053"},"modified":"2022-02-28T06:02:57","modified_gmt":"2022-02-27T20:02:57","slug":"biden-dot-announce-24m-for-the-cnmi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/biden-dot-announce-24m-for-the-cnmi\/","title":{"rendered":"Biden, DOT announce $24M for the CNMI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>WASHINGTON<\/strong>\u2014The Biden Administration and the U.S. Department of Transportation announced Thursday last week more than $1.14 billion to repair and rebuild roads and bridges for\u00a0U.S. territories\u2014\u202fAmerican Samoa,\u202fthe Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands,\u202fGuam and the U.S. Virgin Islands\u2014and Puerto Rico under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The total amount being made available to Puerto Rico and the U.S. territories in fiscal year 2022 is $219 million.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The historic legislation will improve life for residents and create good-paying\u00a0jobs and economic growth. Specifically, it will help repair and rebuild roads and bridges with a focus on climate change mitigation, resilience, equity, and safety for all users, including cyclists and pedestrians.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis funding will greatly support the territories to improve their highway networks, stimulate economic opportunity and increase highway safety,\u201d deputy federal highway administrator Stephanie Pollack said. \u201cToday\u2019s funding will help move forward major repairs to highways and bridges and improve transportation systems on these islands.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Over the five years of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the CNMI will receive $24 million. In fiscal year 2022, it will receive $4.6\u00a0million in funding to pay\u00a0for critical infrastructure needs.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will provide over a 14% increase in funding for Puerto Rico and the territories compared to the funding provided in the Fixing America\u2019s Surface Transportation Act.\u202f In fiscal year 2022, FHWA will provide $173 million in funding for Puerto Rico and a total of nearly $46 million for\u00a0four U.S. territories. \u202f \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century of 1998 established the Puerto Rico Highway Program. The Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1970 created the\u202fTerritorial Highway Program, and subsequent legislation continued the program.
