The 31st Agricultural Fair is happening this Saturday, May 24, at the Civic Center in Susupe.<\/p>\n
Saipan Agricultural Fair Association president Ramon B. Camacho is encouraging not just commercial farmers but also small-scale ones to participate in this year\u2019s event.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe encourage not only commercial farmers but those who have their backyard farms or those who have small plantations of fruits and vegetables to showcase their locally grown produce to the island,\u201d Camacho said.<\/p>\n
On Saturday, the livestock and agricultural produce competition will start at 6am.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey will be judging on the best plants and animals during the fair,\u201d Camacho said.<\/p>\n
Three judges would evaluate the animals while another three will judge the plants, he added.<\/p>\n
At 10am the tabulation of all points will ensue followed by the announcement of winners in the afternoon.<\/p>\n
The raffle drawings will start at 12pm.<\/p>\n
Camacho said that raffle tickets are $5 each and will continue to sell until the event actually starts on Saturday. <\/p>\n
\u201cThere will also be lots of activities for the people to enjoy,\u201d Camacho said.<\/p>\n
One of the fair\u2019s highlights is the \u201cgreasy pig\u201d competition. Camacho said that children from ages 7 to 12 can join the activity and attempt to catch a pig in a caged area. The one who captures it gets to keep it. <\/p>\n
According to Camacho, only five pigs will be used for the activity and the entrance fee is $2.<\/p>\n
Aside from the scheduled activities, vendors of the Sabalu Farmers Market will also be selling produce at the fair. The Northern Marianas College-Cooperative Research and Extension Education Services will also be putting up demonstrations.<\/p>\n
Camacho noted that there are still spaces available for those who want to showcase their produce or provide services at the fair. Spaces of about 10×10 cost $100 while the 10×20 spaces cost $150.<\/p>\n
