{"id":363526,"date":"2022-03-04T06:00:29","date_gmt":"2022-03-03T20:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=363526"},"modified":"2022-03-04T06:00:29","modified_gmt":"2022-03-03T20:00:29","slug":"dementia-support-group-sets-trainings-on-end-of-life-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/dementia-support-group-sets-trainings-on-end-of-life-care\/","title":{"rendered":"Dementia support group sets trainings on end-of-life care"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Starting this March and continuing through April, the Guam\/Micronesia Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program of the University of Guam School of Health\u00a0will provide an opportunity for caregivers of persons with dementia to participate in\u00a0an online\u00a0training and certification program called\u00a0CARES\u00a0End-of-Life Dementia Care. This award-winning program\u00a0helps family and professional caregivers understand what is happening to a person with dementia at the end of life and equips caregivers with tools and strategies to approach end-of-life care with confidence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The program has five modules, three of which will take place this month:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Module 1:<\/strong> Introduction to End-of-Life Dementia Care<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 6pm-8pm, Wednesday,\u00a0March 2, or<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 10am-noon, Saturday,\u00a0March 5<\/p>\n<p><strong>Module 2:<\/strong> The CARES Approach<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 6pm-8pm, Wednesday,\u00a0March 16, or<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 10am-noon, Saturday,\u00a0March 19<\/p>\n<p><strong>Module 3:<\/strong> Decision Making at the End of Life<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 6pm-8pm, Wednesday,\u00a0March 30, or<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 10am-noon, Saturday,\u00a0April 2<\/p>\n<p>Participants who complete all five modules will receive a certificate of completion and will be eligible for CARES\u00a0Dementia Certification.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>CARES\u00a0was created by HealthCare Interactive, an organization that specializes in online training for caregivers of persons with Alzheimer\u2019s disease and other forms of dementia. All of the\u00a0CARES\u00a0training programs were developed in collaboration with the Alzheimer\u2019s Association and include evidence-based strategies\u00a0grounded in the Alzheimer\u2019s Association Dementia Care Practice Recommendations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Special sessions featuring local literature<\/strong><br \/>\nAt 6pm on Wednesday, March 9, and again at 10am on Saturday, March 12, the program will feature a special presentation on making meaningful connections with older adults and persons with dementia through collaborative readings of local literature from Guam,\u00a0including novels, short stories, and picture books.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Several authors will be in attendance at the virtual session to share the inspiration for their writing and to give a live reading from their books.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The session will include live readings from the following books:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <em>Neni Girl from Agat,<\/em> Guam by Anita Borja Enriquez, DBA\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2022<em> Where\u2019s Ko\u2019ko\u2019?<\/em> by Isaiah Diaz\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <em>CHamoru Legends: A Gathering of Stories<\/em> retold by Teresita Lourdes Perez<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <em>Ma Guaiya Yu\u2019, si N\u00e5na yan si T\u00e5ta\u00a0(Grandma and Grandpa Love Me)<\/em> by Simone Bollinger yan Dana Bollinger\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <em>Guaiyayon na Trongkon Mansanita (The Loveable Mansanita Tree)<\/em> by Dolores Indalecio Camacho\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The support group will also feature Sen.
