{"id":365796,"date":"2022-04-06T06:01:22","date_gmt":"2022-04-05T20:01:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=365796"},"modified":"2022-04-06T06:01:22","modified_gmt":"2022-04-05T20:01:22","slug":"liske-clark-wins-essay-contest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/liske-clark-wins-essay-contest\/","title":{"rendered":"Liske-Clark wins essay contest\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_365793\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-365793\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Samantha-Liske-Clarkw-225x300.jpg\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-365793\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Liske Clar<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Samantha Liske-Clark, a freshman studying at the New York University Abu Dhabi, has been named the winner of the Retta Sue Hamilton Memorial Scholarship essay contest that was organized by the non-profit group Our Common Wealth 670.<\/p>\n<p>Liske-Clark, who strongly believes in conservation and hopes to use her Biology degree to protect vulnerable species, will be receiving a check for $1,000 to pursue her higher education toward her future career.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cI am truly honored to have my essay chosen. I really appreciate this opportunity,\u201d said Liske-Clark in her email response to the announcement of her selection as the contest\u2019s winner.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_365791\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-365791\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Retta-Sue-Hamiltonw-300x300.jpg\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-365791\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hamilton<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n<p>In its email message congratulating Liske-Clark, the Our Common Wealth 670 board thanks her for applying for the contest and that \u201creading your essay reaffirms our mission and goal for a better Marianas. It also reminds us of the amazing hope and potential you and other young leaders hold\u2014which made picking one scholarship recipient all the more difficult.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The essay contest was a celebration of Retta Sue Hamilton\u2019s life and life\u2019s work and was open to graduating CNMI high school seniors and to currently enrolled U.S. college students at an accredited university or college who graduated from a Northern Marianas high school.<\/p>\n<p>Hamilton (1973-2021) was a lifelong advocate of animals and the environment. Hamilton\u2019s first rosary will be held on April 7.<\/p>\n<p>According to their website, Our Common Wealth 670, is a \u201cgrassroots community group who advocates for the de-escalation of militarization throughout the Marianas archipelago.\u201d Their goal is \u201cto protect our ancestral lands, seas and skies from irreparable damage caused by military practices and other developments that pose a threat to our health, physical environment and livelihoods by increasing awareness of current military planning and the policies that affect us the most.
