{"id":367025,"date":"2022-04-26T06:05:04","date_gmt":"2022-04-25T20:05:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=367025"},"modified":"2022-04-26T06:05:04","modified_gmt":"2022-04-25T20:05:04","slug":"new-book-on-latte-in-the-marianas-launched-at-jkpl","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/new-book-on-latte-in-the-marianas-launched-at-jkpl\/","title":{"rendered":"New book on latte in the Marianas launched at JKPL"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_367026\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-367026\" style=\"width: 430px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Latte-pix-11.jpg\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-367026\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Joseph Quinata and Kelly Marsh pose with the new book Latte in the Marianas at the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library Saturday morning.\u00a0(Leigh Gases)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A new book featuring one of the most iconic images of Chamorro culture, the latte, could soon be coming to a coffee-table near you, with Saturday morning\u2019s launch of Latte in the Marianas at the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library.<\/p>\n<p>The new book, a compilation of 80 voices that contributed to the stories, knowledge, and histories of the latte was unveiled to the public\u2014fittingly enough\u2014at the Children of our Homeland Center building of the library, which is set inside a replica of an ancient latte Chamorro house.<\/p>\n<p>Contributing authors Kelly Marsh from Guam, and Joseph Quinata, chief program officer from the Guam Preservation Trust, led the presentation of the book to school librarians, JKPL librarians, educators, and other members of the public. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe book is both a vivid and beautiful oversized coffee table book as well as a compilation of over 130 pages of single and double-page entries written by highly regarded cultural practitioners, historians, archaeologists, and historic preservationists who have been part of the Marianas\u2019 cultural renaissance and have years or decades of expertise and experiences to share,\u201d said a statement from the Ayuda Foundation, which is one of the project\u2019s supporters.<\/p>\n<p>According to Marsh\u2019s presentation, she said the book is \u201cvery digestible\u201d and \u201cuser friendly,\u201d but has \u201cvery good academic sources and over 1,000 archaeology reports.\u201d The articles are either in 50 words, 250 words, or 500 words, which can be read in a couple of minutes or up to 15 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Quinata said that all public libraries in Guam and the CNMI, including Tinian and Rota, and all public and private school libraries will get a copy of the book. \u201cThat\u2019s really the main reason why we\u2019re here\u2014to distribute the books to the library.
