{"id":368291,"date":"2022-05-12T06:01:58","date_gmt":"2022-05-11T20:01:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=368291"},"modified":"2022-05-12T06:01:58","modified_gmt":"2022-05-11T20:01:58","slug":"40-boats-expected-for-mahi-mahi-derby","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/40-boats-expected-for-mahi-mahi-derby\/","title":{"rendered":"40 boats expected for mahi-mahi derby"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Saipan Fishermen\u2019s Association will finally push through with its 18th Annual Mahi-Mahi Fishing Derby this coming Saturday after postponing it last month due to inclement weather.<\/p>\n<p>SFA president Tony Scragg said the start of registration is tomorrow, May 13, from 4pm to 6pm at the Smiling Cove Marina.<\/p>\n<p>The actual competition will be on Saturday, May 14, from 6am to 5pm in the waters around the Northern Marianas.<\/p>\n<p>Scragg hopes the recent rise in fuel prices won\u2019t affect their expected turnout for the 18th Annual Mahi-Mahi Fishing Derby.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re expecting 40 boats\u2026I hope [the increase in fuel prices] won\u2019t have too much of an effect,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The 18th Annual Mahi-Mahi Fishing Derby\u2019s prizes include $2,000 cash for first place, $1,500 for second place, $1,000 for third place, and consolation prizes for fourth and fifth places. The registration fee is $100 per boat, including one captain and one angler, and $25 for each additional angler.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, captain Alvin Iglecias and his crew of five aboard the boat Trophy won the 17th Annual Mahi-Mahi Fishing Derby after reeling in an 18.9-lb mahi. Iglecias\u2019 team included Ivan Ilmov, Keith Torres, Brandon Echalico, John Jimeno, and Phil Babauta<\/p>\n<p>CAT-SIKA of captain Jesse Sablan landed an 18.2-lb mahi to win second place, while rounding out the Top 3 was Kingfisher 2 of captain Jun Azarcon with their 17.9-lb catch.
