{"id":370783,"date":"2022-06-20T06:04:46","date_gmt":"2022-06-19T20:04:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=370783"},"modified":"2022-06-20T06:04:46","modified_gmt":"2022-06-19T20:04:46","slug":"png-wins-first-medal-of-the-games","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/png-wins-first-medal-of-the-games\/","title":{"rendered":"PNG wins first medal of the Games"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_370777\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-370777\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/PNG-pix-V.-Apisahwb.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/PNG-pix-V.-Apisahwb.jpg\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-370777\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">V.-Apisah<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Papua New Guinea won the first medal of the Northern Marianas Pacific Mini Games 2022 after its women\u2019s team struck gold in the tennis competition Saturday at the American Memorial Park tennis courts.<\/p>\n<p>Pitted against fellow powerhouse Fiji, the women\u2019s team led by Abigail Tere-Apisah and her nieces\u2014Violet and Patricia\u2014overwhelmed their opponents, 2-0, in the finals.<\/p>\n<p>Tere-Apisah, who once was ranked as high as No. 276 in the WTA Tour, kicked things off for PNG by blanking Ruby Coffin, 6-0, 6-0.<\/p>\n<p>Violet then turned red to secure the tie after beating Saoirse Breen, 6-2, 6-1, to the delight of the PNG crowd who quickly erupted in celebration.<\/p>\n<p>Tere-Apisah, who just nine months ago became a new mother, said getting the first gold medal of the Games is special for the team.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_370775\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-370775\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/PNG-pix-Tere-Apisahwb.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/PNG-pix-Tere-Apisahwb.jpg\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-370775\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tere-Apisah<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s nice to know that we got the first gold medal of the Games. So that\u2019s extra special. I\u2019m just so happy the past couple of months putting in the work on the court and it\u2019s so nice to be back and competing, now as a mom and doing it for my country, my son, and my family,\u201d said the 29-year-old from Port Moresby.<\/p>\n<p>Violet, who actually was PNG\u2019s No. 1, said the gold medal was made more special since she won with family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFeels great and to do it alongside my family it\u2019s a great experience. I\u2019ve been involved with PNG since 2015 where we turned around tennis in that nation\u2026This group has been together since 2015. Some of these players have been with us since 2015 like Matthew Stubbings and the Apisah family is legendary in tennis and they\u2019re unbelievable.
