Teresita A. Santos (Ind-Rota) and three others were the first to file their candidacies before the Commonwealth Election Commission in Susupe yesterday for the Nov. 8 general election.<\/p>\n<p>CEC executive director Kayla Igitol said the CEC started accepting submission of nominating petitions and candidacy documents yesterday and that Santos was the earliest to file at 7:49am, followed by Magdalena San Nicolas Mesngon, Ignacio Villagomez Cabrera, and Joseph Mu\u00f1a Mendiola.<\/p>\n<p>Igitol said that Santos is running for mayor of Rota as an independent candidate.<\/p>\n<p>The senator said yesterday that she still has a lot of work ahead of her as she will continue to meet with her people and engage in \u201cmeaningful conversations and attentively listen and hear first-hand their issues, concerns, ideas, recommendations and actively integrate it\u201d into her platform.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy platform is forthcoming and will be released in the very near future,\u201d Santos said.<\/p>\n<p>Santos\u2019 second term as senator will end in January 2023. She also served two terms as a member of the House of Representatives.<\/p>\n<p>Igitol said Mesngon is seeking election for mayor of Rota as an independent as well.<\/p>\n<p>Mesngon is currently a Head Start teacher. She previously served as director of Rota\u2019s Community and Cultural Affairs.<\/p>\n<p>Igitol said Cabrera filed his candidacy for a Precinct 5 seat in the House of Representatives as an independent. Cabrera is chairman of the Friends of the Monument.<\/p>\n<p>Igitol said Mendiola filed his candidacy for Saipan Municipal Council.<br \/>\nBack in 2018, Mendiola filed his candidacy as an independent candidate for Precinct 5 of the House. The CEC, however, informed him that he did not meet the residency requirements at that time. Mendiola then submitted a letter to CEC, informing them about his withdrawal as a candidate. He said he respects the requirements of election laws.<\/p>\n<p>Aug. 10, 2022 is the last day to file candidacies and submit nominating petitions. Yesterday was also the last day to establish residency requirements.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sen. Teresita A.
