The slots are limited and if you would like to join, visit Gold’s Gym Saipan to register and pay.

Gold’s Gym Saipan’s first “SBD Powerlifting Meet” competition is an unsanctioned, casual meet where you can set new personal records and vie for the first, second, and third place prizes.

These will be awarded to the Top 3 men and Top 3 women in the open division (placement based on Wilks Formula). All lifters will be in the open division upon registering.

Shoes are required. Tall socks that cover the shins and lifting singlets are highly recommended. A lifter’s knees must be visible (to judge lockout). Standard “raw” powerlifting accessories are allowed (belt, knee/elbow sleeves, wrist wraps, etc.), but assistive gear (squat/DL suits, slingshots, briefs, knee wraps, sleeves made of wrap material, etc.) are not allowed.

The meet will be performed with a Rogue Standard Bar and Hampton Olympic Rubber Coated Plates. All weights will be in pounds. The bar can hold up to 640 lbs in this fashion.

Each lifter will be granted three attempts in a standard round robin flight arrangement. Opening attempts will be given at weigh-in and can be changed until 5 minutes before a lifter’s flight. Second and third attempts must be given to the scorer’s table within 60 seconds of completion of the previous lift. A lifter may not reduce their attempt weight and can increase their weight by 5-lb increments only. Only third attempts may be changed, up until the bar has been loaded, and up to two changes can be made.

Jamila Alegre, a National Academy Sports Medicine-certified personal trainer at Gold’s Gym Saipan, is encouraging people to join and break their personal records or set their personal records in the squat, bench press, and deadlift.

She told Saipan Tribune that her inspiration to start the first powerlifting meet is “the people at the gym. After seeing so many strong individuals, it just inspired me to push for the first powerlifting meet because we don’t usually have something like that… People would like to showcase their strength and talents in the sport. And hopefully we could get a powerlifting federation here one day.”

She expects that those competing will “come out of their comfort zone and show people what powerlifting really is so we can get more people to compete- more people to join. The satisfaction of hitting a PR is just a really good feeling and they get to show their friends and family what they usually do at the gym—what really goes down inside the gym.”

Additionally, since it’s a mostly men-dominated sport, she hopes that with this first meet, women will take to the sport and try it out.

Alegre competed twice in the Dee Clayton Bodybuilding Competition and made the switch to “powerbuilding,” which is a combination of powerlifting and bodybuilding to keep her physique.

Additional details for rules and regulations for the competition will be posted at Gold’s Gym Saipan.

[5

post-372942","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-sports
["GET
