I Sanhalom Laguna Anglers Association president Joe Torres said that the youth are \u201calways welcome\u201d to the fishing derby held every year within the waters inside the Saipan lagoon.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s 4th Annual Mafuti Derby had a good number of children join their families out on the 46 boats within the lagoon, and with the event held close to shore, it promotes a safe and fun activity and competition.<\/p>\n

Torres said that \u201cwe always promote youth programs, so our members 12 years old and below are free of charge to join the event.\u201d He encourages more children to join the derby and to learn more about \u201csustainable fishing\u2014just for fun\u2026 We\u2019re on an island and we\u2019re surrounded by the ocean so definitely we want our kids to learn this stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe guys on their boats always bring their young kids\u2026 and they\u2019re always teaching [them] how to fish\u2026 It\u2019s an event that\u2019s in the lagoon so a lot of fishermen bring their kids because it\u2019s safe\u2014we don\u2019t have to go far out. [There\u2019s] no registration cost too for children under 12, so it\u2019s easier to bring the kids out\u2026 we also issue out lifejackets to boats that have children just to promote safe boating,\u201d said Torres.<\/p>\n

The youth this year was in fact highlighted, as the overall winner for the derby was 8-year-old fisherman, Reyong John Moses Rasiang, who caught a 5.2-lb mafuti which was the heaviest catch of the derby.<\/p>\n

Taught fishing at the young age of 3 by his grandpa, R.J. has joined the derby every year since its inception in 2018 at just 4 years old, and has always been second place to three-time Mafuti Derby winner Ed Diaz, but this year was the youth\u2019s time to shine.<\/p>\n

Rasiang\u2019s grandfather, George Moses, the captain of their team, said that along with his grandson, he knows a lot of other young fishermen. He encourages the youth to get out there as the \u201cplaying field out there is so big.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

To parents and grandparents, he encourages them to take their \u201cson, grandson, or grand daughters or daughters out to go fishing and show them the playing field\u201d which is the ocean.<\/p>\n

Moses then thanked ISLA, saying that the derby is a \u201cgood community program and you can take children out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Torres then said that \u201cwe always want to thank our sponsors- our sponsors that support us every year. This is our fourth year but all sponsors, we want to thank them. We want to thank all the fishermen that came out to join the event. And also especially thank you to the committee that organized all this stuff\u2026 We\u2019re going to try and grow the event next year again and hopefully have more youth involvement.\u201d<\/p>\n
