(KIMBERLY BAUTISTA)

The United Filipino Organization CNMI Inc., broke ground last Friday on the construction of a new pavilion along Beach Road, near the 13 Fisherman monument.

UFO, headed by its president, Mar Masilungan, led the groundbreaking ceremony for the project, which is a collaborative effort between UFO and the CNMI leadership.

Gov. Ralph DLG Torres, Department of Public Lands Secretary Sixto Igisomar, and Department of Lands and Natural Resources acting director Gus Kaipat joined Masilungan and the officers and representatives of the 10-member organizations of UFO at the project site on Thursday afternoon.

In his remarks, Torres expressed his appreciation and gratitude to the Filipino organization and their tremendous efforts to give back to the community.

In addition, Torres announced to the group that he would be allocating $50,000 of federal funds to the organization to aid them in their ongoing and future community projects.

Masilungan said the pavilion will be UFO’s first legacy project. “After much observations and research around Garapan, I’ve noticed that there are only a few pavilions along Beach Road in Garapan. Since its existence in 1992, UFO has never built nor has been given the grant to build a structure to mark the organization’s existence. Now we will have this pavilion as UFO’s first legacy project,” he said.

Gov.
