{"id":381886,"date":"2022-12-20T06:06:30","date_gmt":"2022-12-19T20:06:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=381886"},"modified":"2022-12-20T06:06:30","modified_gmt":"2022-12-19T20:06:30","slug":"a-sonnet-for-the-winter-solstice-haikus-for-hanukkah","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/a-sonnet-for-the-winter-solstice-haikus-for-hanukkah\/","title":{"rendered":"A sonnet for the winter solstice; haikus for Hanukkah"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>A CNMI Winter Solstice Sonnet<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>(Winter solstice is Thursday, Dec. 22, 2022)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The sun is coming up, the sun is going down<br \/>\nlisten to the sound of rain on banana trees<br \/>\nbright flowers are blooming all over town<br \/>\nenjoy that nice cooling trade wind breeze<br \/>\nafter the sun has risen you see that it rose<br \/>\non its shortest trip through the sky this year<br \/>\nstill long enough to burn your face and nose<br \/>\ntime for lemon in your tea a tear in your beer<br \/>\nafter it sets it is still not yet time for bed<br \/>\nall those things you wanted to do in daylight<br \/>\nbut the tilting of the earth you cannot fight<br \/>\nas winter solstice through heaven knocks<br \/>\nI can\u2019t wait for Spring and vernal equinox.<\/p>\n<p><strong>8 Happy Hanukkah Haiku<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>(Hanukkah is Dec. 18 to Dec. 26)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I wrote this 20 years ago for my students. Chanukkah occurs around the same time\u00a0as Christmas and is called Festival of Lights. Would you like to know something about\u00a0Hanukkah? Then read these haiku\/senryu.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Temple lamp lit for one night\/stayed lit for 8\/so we remember.<br \/>\nFirst night one candle\/light a new candle each night\/a blessing each day.<br \/>\nFestival of Lights\/say \u201cnas gadol haya sham\u201d\/for 8 successive days.<br \/>\nJudah Maccabee said\/a great miracle happened here\/Chanukkah time<br \/>\n8 branch menorah candle lit\/temple rededication\/on the date 25 Kislev<br \/>\nHanukkah is complete\/with 8 candles lit in the menorah\/giving gelt (gold but now chocolate) gifts, potato latkes (pancakes) and song<br \/>\nSpin the top (dredl) now\/and sing the song\/\u201csavivon sov sov sov, dredl spin spin spin\u201d<br \/>\nMenorah aglow\/it is a Jewish holiday<br \/>\nHappy Hanukkah!<\/p>\n<p>***<br \/>\n<em>Joey aka Pepe Batbon Connolly is a retired educator who taught in the CNMI, NOLA, and LVNV.
