{"id":382446,"date":"2022-12-29T06:06:08","date_gmt":"2022-12-28T20:06:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=382446"},"modified":"2022-12-29T06:06:08","modified_gmt":"2022-12-28T20:06:08","slug":"mhs-team-wins-nmi-app-challenge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/mhs-team-wins-nmi-app-challenge\/","title":{"rendered":"MHS team wins NMI App Challenge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The team of Carson Lin, James Lin, Dip Roy, and Jaehoon Son of Marianas High School are the winners of the 8th Annual Northern Mariana Islands Congressional App Challenge.<\/p>\n<p>The Marianas High School students scored the top rank over 11 other submissions from schools around the Northern Marianas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year\u2019s competition saw great submissions from students,\u201d said Delegate Gregorio Kilili C. Sablan (D-MP). \u201cEvery submission we received demonstrated students\u2019 dedication to learning how to code, identify[ing] real-world problems, and coming up with solutions through technology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Judges for this year\u2019s app challenge were former district staff member Katrina Punzalan and current district caseworker Randy Johnson. Punzalan used to run outreach for the Congressional App Challenge through the congressional office for the Marianas. She builds, modifies, and troubleshoots computers as a hobby. Johnson holds a bachelor\u2019s degree in Information Technology with a specialty in Software Engineering.<\/p>\n<p>The MHS team\u2019s app is called MathPal, a web-based platform that helps high school students understand mathematical concepts through step-by-step user-friendly output.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=kvdRbKUoX6Q\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=kvdRbKUoX6Q<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As the Northern Marianas\u2019 winning team, the team of four will receive national recognition and have their work eligible for display at the U.S. Capitol. They will also be invited to attend the House of Code reception in Washington, D.C., where they will have the opportunity to meet fellow coders nationwide and be honored for their work.<\/p>\n<p>The Congressional App Challenge is an annual competition open to middle school and high school students to encourage students to inspire students to actively be involved in STEM learning and innovation. Apps can be submitted for any platform, such as Web browsers, smartphones, computers, or tablets.
