{"id":386473,"date":"2023-03-03T06:06:11","date_gmt":"2023-03-02T20:06:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=386473"},"modified":"2023-03-03T06:06:11","modified_gmt":"2023-03-02T20:06:11","slug":"pamc-stands-firm-vs-japan-plan-to-dump-nuke-wastewater","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/pamc-stands-firm-vs-japan-plan-to-dump-nuke-wastewater\/","title":{"rendered":"PAMC stands firm vs Japan plan to dump nuke wastewater"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Despite Federated States of Micronesia President David Panuelo\u2019s decision to withdraw his protest against the nuclear wastewater dumping into the Pacific Ocean, the Pacific Alliance of Municipal Councils stands firm in its position against Japan\u2019s plan to dump 1.1 million tons of nuclear wastewater into the Pacific.<\/p>\n<p>According to a PAMC news release yesterday, it said the plan will involve dumping nuclear wastewater into the Pacific at the rate of 43,965 gallons per month or 527,578 gallons a year over a period of 10 years. <\/p>\n<p>The PAMC news release states that its primary concern is that the tests to determine the toxicity level of the wastewater \u201care based on current ocean composition, and no amount of tests done today can predict future environmental conditions that may interact with the toxic waste\u201d that Japan will dump into the ocean from the devastated Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant that was destroyed by a tsunami in March 2011. <\/p>\n<p>PAMC\u2019s second argument is that \u201cno matter how minuscule the toxicity is, it will be consumed by small fish, which are prey to larger fish, as well as the cumulative collection on coral reefs and sea plants.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The third argument is based on the safety assurance made years before the nuclear power plant was established and how those assurances failed against a tsunami\u2019s wrath. <\/p>\n<p>The fourth argument is that if Japan and Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant are so certain of the wastewater safety, \u201cthey can seek permission from the citizens of Japan to release the wastewater on land in Japan or use the wastewater for irrigation and not threaten other nations and people\u2019s mental and physical security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>PAMC will continue reaching out to organizations and governments of other Pacific island nations to band together and fight against the implementation of Japan and FNPP\u2019s plan.
