They are all parts of longer poems. It is my hope readers and teachers will seek out biographies and poems of these\u00a0notable 20th\u00a0century women in honor of International Woman\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n<p>Philippines: Ophelia Alcantara Dimalanta (1932 &#8211; 2010) was a Filipina poet,\u00a0author, editor, teacher. She is the winner of many awards. Her poems\u00a0have been translated into Russian, Japanese and Italian.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c\u2026 claw at the same straws<br \/>\npore over the same jigsaws<br \/>\ntrying to make heads or tails<br \/>\nyou take the edges<br \/>\nI take the center<br \/>\nkeeping fancy guard<br \/>\nloving beyond what is there<br \/>\nyou sling at the stars<br \/>\nI bedeck the weeds.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ukraine: Anna Akhmatova (1889-1966) was born in Ukraine, lived most of her life in Odessa, died in Moscow. Survived Josef Stalin\u2019s purges. She is considered the greatest woman poet in Russian literature.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI have lit my treasured candles, one by one<br \/>\nto hallow this night.\u00a0\u00a0With you, who do not come,<br \/>\nI wait for the birth of the year. Dear God!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>China: Qiu Jin (1875 -1907) was a Chinese poet, essayist,\u00a0fiction writer, feminist activist, and revolutionary.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cDon\u2019t speak of how women can\u2019t become heroes:<br \/>\nalone, I rode the winds eastward for ten-thousand leagues.<br \/>\nMy poetic ponderings expanded, a sail between sky and sea,<br \/>\ndreaming of Japan\u2019s three islands, delicate jade under moonlight.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ireland: Evangeline Patterson (1928-2000) was born and raised a\u00a0Protestant in predominantly Roman Catholic Dublin, Ireland.
