St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland and he never wore green.\u00a0The green color became associated with Irish independence and\u00a0superstition says if you wear green the leprechauns (duendes) can\u2019t see you. Patrick changed his name to Patricius using the\u00a0Latin of his parentage. Patrick is a common name in Ireland and\u00a0many people say of an Irishman \u2018oh he\u2019s a Paddy.\u2019 Padraig is Gaelic for Patrick and is pronounced PAW-RICK.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Spud Sprouts Sonnet Shoutouts<\/strong><br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nOn Irish people and the color green in 2023<br \/>\nafter potatoes and green what needs to be said<br \/>\nnot much more than a taste of Irish whisky<br \/>\nit feels good rolling around inside your head<br \/>\nIrish call Ireland \u2018Erin\u2019 or \u2018the Emerald Isle\u2019<br \/>\nit rains a lot there and stays green year round<br \/>\nmany a red-haired lass has Irish eyes that smile<br \/>\nthree leaf shamrocks on the ground abound<br \/>\na single orange, white, and green stripe on their flag<br \/>\nwool on their backs, horses, potatoes in their fields<br \/>\nof winning independence from England Irish brag<br \/>\nvarious grains provide ample beer and whisky yields.<br \/>\nmusicians, writers, songs, dances, prose, poetry, verse<br \/>\nin Gaelic and English one hears blessings and curse.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n<strong>On St. Patrick\u2019s Day: A Sonnet On It<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Green gewgaws appear in variety stores before Valentine\u2019s Day<br \/>\ngreen leprechaun T-shirts, shamrock ties and hats sold by the score<br \/>\ngreen beer everywhere, a green river even runs in Chicago today<br \/>\nIn New York City\u2019s parade Irish cops, pipes, marching and more<br \/>\nIn Erin folks used to get up and go to Mass in a local church<br \/>\nthey\u2019d eat a simple meal of beef or fish, potatoes, tea and bread<br \/>\nmany Irish leave the big $ green commercial scene in the lurch<br \/>\nat Mass underneath ladies\u2019 wool scarves peeks hair of red<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nSt. Patrick passed away on the Emerald Isle 1,400 years ago<br \/>\nkidnapped in Scotland and taken in slavery to Erin as a young boy<br \/>\nafter six years he escaped to Scotland in a boat he could row<br \/>\nhe returned to Ireland bringing Druids Irish Catholic guilt and joy<br \/>\nnow St. Patrick is used as an excuse to drink booze like a fish<br \/>\nfrom green beer to whisky dear many just want to be Irish.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n***<br \/>\n<em>Joey aka Pepe Batbon Connolly is a retired educator who taught in the CNMI, NOLA, and LVNV.
