(Photos by UNIVERSITY OF GUAM)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>High school students from St. John\u2019s School and the Academy of Our Lady of Guam took the first-place trophies at the 14th annual University of Guam Chemistry Titration Competition that was held during UOG\u2019s Charter Day on March 2. This year\u2019s competition hosted the largest number of competitors to date, with 36 students from nine high schools.<\/p>\n<p>Hosted by the chemistry faculty under the UOG College of Natural &amp; Applied Sciences and with chemistry majors serving as the judges, the two-part competition tests students\u2019 lab skills and precision in determining the concentration of a base and the mass of an acid through titration, or volume measurement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI enjoy titrating and working with my team,\u201d said Kai-Li Updegrove, a 12th grade St. John\u2019s student who took first in both the individual and team competitions. \u201cMath isn\u2019t my strongest subject, but the competition helped me improve my math skills when we completed the calculations.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_387696\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-387696\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/6417f26864ae7.image_.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-387696\" src=\"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/6417f26864ae7.image_-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-387696\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cBest Laboratory Skill\u201d award winners of the 2023 Chemistry Titration Competition on March 2 at the University of Guam. Karen Bacalia, a winner of the 2016 competition while attending Academy of Our Lady, went on to earn dual bachelor\u2019s degrees in chemistry and agriculture from UOG in 2021 and is now working on a doctorate in nutritional sciences at Rutgers University \u2013 New Brunswick in New Jersey. Allen Marc Soriano, a student from Father Due\u00f1as Memorial School who won in 2009, earned a biology degree from UOG and is now a licensed pharmacist at Guam Regional Medical City.<\/p>\n<p>The dean of the college, Dr. Lee Yudin, encouraged the participants to consider continuing their interest in science at UOG.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a wonderful dual degree program in chemistry and biology, and we have many graduates who go on to medical school,\u201d he said. \u201cYou have greater advantage getting into top-notch medical schools in the mainland coming from a small institution and being a Pacific Islander.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The winners of the competition were:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Best Individual<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1st place: Kai-Li Updegrove, St. John\u2019s School<\/li>\n<li>2nd place: Joseph Rion Ordonez, Okkodo High School<\/li>\n<li>3rd place: Alfred Joshua Morales, St. John\u2019s School<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Best Team<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1st place: Kai-Li Updegrove and Liam Padua, St. John\u2019s School<\/li>\n<li>2nd place: Seohee Min and Alfred Joshua Morales, St. John\u2019s School<\/li>\n<li>3rd place: Everett Singleton and Bernard Malicsi, Father Due\u00f1as Memorial School<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Best Laboratory Skill<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1st place: Arlett Mikayla Fojas, Academy of Our Lady of Guam<\/li>\n<li>2nd place: Thomas Benzon, Father Due\u00f1as Memorial School<\/li>\n<li>3rd place: Ashling Wade-Dickins, Notre Dame High School<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The other participating high schools were John F.
