Gov. David M. Apatang, members of the Legislature, heads of government agencies, and business leaders headlined the opening of OHAS Boulangerie & Café that featured a spread of what the location has to offer, like the visibly appealing passion fruit pastry, savory green onion bagel, decadent chocolate croissant, and pleasantly surprising apple bread.

E-Land CEO Brian Shin said OHAS Boulangerie & Café heralds a new chapter in the company’s journey in the CNMI.

“In 2011 we landed in the CNMI with a dream of becoming a key member of the community and grow together and I believe our dream is still ongoing. But we felt that we still need more effort from our end as much as we need the support from the community. We very much trust the bright future of the CNMI and that is the reason we continue to invest here. I think this bakery in Garapan is definitely one step closer toward our dream,” he said.

By finally having a footprint in Garapan, E-Land can finally say that it has a presence in the north (Kensington Hotel Saipan), south (Pacific Islands Club Saipan and Coral Ocean Resort), and middle (OHAS Boulangerie & Café) of the island, Shin added.

“This bakery started from the comments of local guests telling us that, ‘Okay, you guys are just too far’ because we’re all the way to the north. I didn’t realize how far we were until I started living here and now, I feel that, yes, we’re far. So after a few months of planning, here we are making wishes into reality,” he said, drawing a few laughs from guests.

The opening of OHAS Boulangerie & Café also is not only a nod to local sentiments, but is big boost to the island’s still-recovering tourism industry, the E-Land executive said.

“As a member of the tourism industry of the CNMI, the revitalization of Garapan is essential to our success. Our tourists definitely need to feel welcome and need to find something to do and a place to go. We believe that this small bakery will add to that cause,” he said.

Mariana E-Land vice president Gloria Cavanagh, who served as the mistress of ceremony, thanked the entire E-Land team for making the opening of OHAS Boulangerie & Café possible, specifically extending her gratitude to their food & beverage, engineering, and content divisions.

“There’s so much that goes into the preparation of our products. I hope you see that today. I hope that you’ve seen it when you go to our properties and it’s something that we’re very proud of. We want to bring all these products here to make the CNMI a destination you can be proud of,” she said.

Apatang congratulated Shin and E-Land for opening another business venture in the CNMI.

He also joked that while everything seems to be in the up and up for the South Korean conglomerate, he couldn’t say the same for food and beverage establishments in the area. “I’m not sure whether your neighbors are going to be happy but that’s business,” he said.

Apatang also appealed to Shin and E-Land to perhaps open a branch in San Antonio so residents in the south don’t have to drive this far to get their pastry and bakery fix.

“We need this bakery in the south because gas is getting expensive. Perhaps people from the south can ride a bicycle to come here,” he again joked. “Again, thank you and congratulations on this beautiful bakery and I know that we’re going to enjoy all the pastries and you know the local custom that when you leave you need to get balutan (takeout). [I’m sure] you’re going to see me a lot in here.”

Cavanagh answered Apatang with a comeback of her own, saying that “any one of these pastries actually costs less than a gallon of gas.”

She proudly explained that OHAS Boulangerie & Café expertly mimics E-Land’s chain of bakeries in South Korea. “What we wanted to do was bring that concept here. So. if you actually go to the bakeries that we have in Seoul, it almost looks exactly like this. It is something that is signature to us and to our company. We just wanted to make sure that the product and the quality of the product is here for everyone to enjoy.”

Fr. Ray Rosal, who blessed the newly opened café and bakery, doubled down on Apatang’s request and asked E-Land to open a branch near the Mt. Carmel Cathedral, adding that “We Filipinos, we love bread!”

The launch event concluded with a ribbon-cutting ceremony outside OHAS Boulangerie & Café’s corner lot and shortly after Gov. Arnold I. Palacios arrived the much-anticipated raffle drawing commenced.

OHAS Boulangerie & Café, located in the corner of Beach Road and Orchid Street in Garapan, is open from 7am to 9pm every day.
