The Department of Public Safety was informed immediately after the discovery of the break-in [yesterday] morning. The repeated targeting of this vital community resource is indeed a cause for concern, and it underscores the need for enhanced security measures and community vigilance,” he said.

Despite their efforts to secure the office’s premises following the burglaries it faced last year, it appears the center remains a hotspot for burglars, Manglona said.

“The Saipan Office on Aging had put in place numerous security measures, such as bolted doors/windows, secured fencing around the perimeter, chains, double-sided deadbolt locks, and more, in an attempt to safeguard the building and its valuable contents. However, despite these efforts, thieves still managed to break in and make off with a significant [number] of items, including laptops, a printer/copier, Bluetooth IQ speakers, gift certificates, a portable gas stove, batteries, a bushcutter, and more,” he said.

Manglona appeals to the CNMI public to help DPS find those responsible for these break-ins.

“It is nice to know that the [DPS] is actively involved in the investigation, and the hope is that this will lead to the apprehension of those responsible for this incident. It is crucial for the community to come together and support the authorities in their efforts to solve this case. In the face of such incident, the community must remain vigilant and responsive. If anyone has any information related to this burglary, it is essential to report it to [DPS] and/or the Office on Aging. Together, we can work toward ensuring the safety and security of our community resources and protect them from such unfortunate events in the future,” he said.

In the meantime, Manglona said, the Office on Aging will continue to strengthen security at the center in hopes of putting an end to what seems to be an annual occurrence.

“Let’s hope that the culprits are swiftly brought to justice, and that the Office on Aging can continue to serve the elderly population without fear of theft or vandalism. It is important to note that a new cloud-based security cameras will be installed ASAP. In addition, typhoon-proof windows and doors will be installed to help secure the external structure of the building in the efforts of providing a more secure facility,” he said.

The CNMI’s Office on Aging in Garapan.

-KIMBERLY B.
