Houston, we have a problem: Where\u2019s Kevin?<\/p>\n
Perhaps the ultimate coming-home movie, \u201cApollo 13,\u201d and the ultimate staying-home one, \u201cHome Alone,\u201d are both being honored this year, selected for preservation in the National Film Registry They\u2019re part of an annual group of 25 that this year spans more than 90 years of filmmaking.<\/p>\n
The 2023 collection includes the sci-fi sequel \u201cTerminator 2: Judgment Day,\u201d the Disney animated classic \u201cLady and the Tramp,\u201d and the searing, Oscar-winning drama \u201c12 Years a Slave.\u201d Just in time for the holidays, \u201cThe Nightmare Before Christmas\u201d is included.<\/p>\n
The oldest film is from 1921: \u201cA Movie Trip Through Filmland,\u201d a very early look at the impact of movies. The newest are both from 2013: \u201c12 Years a Slave\u201d and the Oscar-winning documentary \u201c20 Feet From Stardom,\u201d about backup singers.<\/p>\n
The registry is housed at the Library of Congress, which since 1988 has selected movies for preservation based on their cultural and historic importance. The current picks bring the registry to 875 films \u2014 some, but not all, among the 2 million items in the library\u2019s collection. Turner Classic Movies will host a TV special on Thursday, screening a selection of this year\u2019s movies.<\/p>\n
A look at some of the films entering the registry<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Wedding Banquet\u201d (1993): Ang Lee\u2019s romantic comedy about a gay man from Taiwan trying to hide his orientation from his family, featuring an over-the-top wedding banquet.<\/p>\n
\u201cBamboozled\u201d (2000): Spike Lee\u2019s stinging satire about race in entertainment, with Damon Wayans as a program executive at a cable network.<\/p>\n
\u201cMaya Lin: A Strong, Clear Vision\u201d (1994): Freida Lee Mock\u2019s Oscar-winning documentary about the artist who created two famous memorials.<\/p>\n
\u201cApollo 13\u201d (1995): Ron Howard\u2019s impeccably told chronicle of the near-tragedy involving U.S astronauts trying to get back to Earth, featuring Tom Hanks and the famous (and slightly altered) quote: \u201cHouston, we have a problem.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cDesperately Seeking Susan\u201d (1985): Susan Seidelman\u2019s uniquely New York saga featuring Rosanna Arquette and none other than Madonna as the elusive Susan.<\/p>\n
\u201cMatewan\u201d (1987): John Sayles\u2019 tale of efforts in 1920 to unionize a company town in West Virginia.<\/p>\n
\u201cHome Alone\u201d (1990): Chris Columbus\u2019 holiday classic about, let\u2019s face it, deeply questionable parenting that made wide-eyed Macaulay Culkin \u2014 aka Kevin \u2014 a star.<\/p>\n
\u201cAlambrista\u201d (1977): Robert M. Young\u2019s story of a Mexican migrant laborer in the United States.<\/p>\n
\u201cFame\u201d (1980): A story of students seeking fame at the High School of Performing Arts in New York City, and known for Irene Cara\u2019s version of the title song.<\/p>\n
\u201cLady and the Tramp\u201d (1955): The classic Disney canine love story, featuring surely the most famous spaghetti kiss in animated film.<\/p>\n
