{"id":404284,"date":"2024-01-30T14:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-01-30T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=404284"},"modified":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"-0001-11-29T14:00:00","slug":"UOG-Philosophy-program-hosts-Our-Island-Our-Future-youth-camp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/UOG-Philosophy-program-hosts-Our-Island-Our-Future-youth-camp\/","title":{"rendered":"UOG Philosophy program hosts \u2018Our Island, Our Future\u2019 youth camp"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Guam\u2019s Philosophy Program offered a youth camp in December 2023 with the theme \u201cOur Island, Our Future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The day camp was aimed at helping Guam\u2019s future generations take an active role in shaping the island\u2019s future.<\/p>\n<p>The camp\u2019s two weeklong sessions were provided free of charge and encouraged children ages 8 to 13 to think about questions revolving around Guam and its future\u2014through fun and engaging activities.<\/p>\n<p>The camp fostered conversation topics such as one\u2019s identity; the relationship between self and community; the interconnectedness of self, nature, and communities; environmental ethics; and technology and social media.<\/p>\n<p>The camp also promoted intergenerational philosophical conversations through four \u201cat-home\u201d activities that campers and their parents collaboratively engaged in.<\/p>\n<p>Camp success and support<\/p>\n<p>Post-camp surveys report that more than 80% of participating campers made friends, had good conversations, engaged in fun activities, and gained a better understanding of philosophy. Moreover, 100% of participating parents felt that the camp encouraged important discussions about Guam and its future and agreed that the \u201cat-home activities\u201d helped generate intergenerational conversations.<\/p>\n<p>The camp was free of charge, thanks to sponsorships and donations made by the National Endowment for the Humanities, Humanities Gu\u00e5han, the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences UOG, the UOG Global Learning and Engagement Office, and the Philosophy Learning and Teaching Organization. Lunches were sponsored by Raising Cane\u2019s, Market Deli, and Jamaican Grill. The camp was directed by Dr. Jonathan Wurtz and facilitated by Dr. Brett Fulkerson-Smith, both UOG Philosophy professors.
