In the Caribbean islands, calypso singers sang songs with political and socio-economic messages combined with scat-type beats and lyrics.<\/p>\n<p>Readers may go online and listen to Joseph Spence sing <em>On the Rolling Sea<\/em> and you\u2019ll hear what I mean. My personal favorite is the Mighty Sparrow, SOCA (soul\/calypso) King of Carnival on Trinidad and Tobago for many years. He has written over 50 songs and recorded 70 albums. In 1987 he received an honorary Doctor of Letters (D. Litt) and in 2015 was awarded an OBE Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. He lives in Queens, NY and recorded a new album with full orchestra, <em>Live at 85<\/em>, in 2020. His song, <em>Interdependence<\/em>, was recorded in 1979.<\/p>\n<p><h3>Interdependence<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p><em>Sung by the Mighty Sparrow<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Independence, who is totally independent<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Freedom, is there absolute freedom<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Like the sunshine needs rainy weather we all need one another<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It really shouldn\u2019t matter what\u2019s a person\u2019s color creed or race<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I believe in equal opportunity for everyone and equal place<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Dependence on each other for freedom and survival are unmistakably<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>and essentially vital, in other words, \u2018<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>(chorus)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I need you, you need me.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Together we can be happy, sometimes I may not show it and you may<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>not know it, but without me there\u2019s no you and vice versa, so the very<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>essence of our Interdependence is peace, love discipline and tolerance.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>On commitment, can man long afford non-involvement<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>A neighbor\u2019s crisis we pretend is none of we business<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>But whatever happens around you has a direct effect upon you<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>If you should see your neighbors house afire no matter whatever the<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>cause, try and help him put it out at the same time with yours<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Yes very often we see for we own security its necessary to assist with<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>enemy, may I repeat:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>(chorus)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I need you, you need me\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Financial aid we must give or get and we must trade<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Foodstuff seems man could never produce enough<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Scientific breakthrough in medicine is for improved health in<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>every person. Penicillin was one of those that disease we can control<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>an accidental discovery by man for man throughout the world<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Judicial protection, spiritual instruction must be rendered by man<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>to save man.
