A bullet from the back of the bush took Medgar Evers\u2019 blood<\/p>\n
A finger fired the trigger to his name, a handle hid out in the dark<\/p>\n
A hand set the spark, two eyes took the aim, behind a man\u2019s brain<\/p>\n
But he can\u2019t be blamed, He\u2019s only a pawn in their game.<\/p>\n
A South politician preaches to the poor white man<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019ve got more than the blacks, don\u2019t complain<\/p>\n
You\u2019re better than them, you\u2019ve been born with white skin,\u201d they explain<\/p>\n
And the Negro\u2019s name is used it is plain for the politicians gain<\/p>\n
as he rises to fame, and the poor white remains on the caboose of the train<\/p>\n
But it ain\u2019t him to blame, He\u2019s only a pawn in their game.<\/p>\n
The deputy sheriffs, the soldiers, the governors get paid,<\/p>\n
and the marshals and cops get the same, But the poor white man\u2019s used in<\/p>\n
the hands of them all like a tool, he\u2019s taught in his school<\/p>\n
from the start by the rule that the laws are with him to protect his white skin,<\/p>\n
to keep up his hate so he never thinks straight \u2018bout the shape that he\u2019s in<\/p>\n
But it ain\u2019t him to blame, he\u2019s only a pawn in their game.<\/p>\n
From the poverty shacks he looks down from the cracks to the tracks<\/p>\n
and the hoofbeats pound in his brain, and he\u2019s taught how to walk in a pack<\/p>\n
shoot in the back, with his fist in a clinch, to hang and to lynch<\/p>\n
to hide \u2018neath a hood (the Ku Klux Klan wear hoods\u2014my comment)<\/p>\n
to kill with no pain, like a dog on a chain, he ain\u2019t got no name<\/p>\n
But it ain\u2019t him to blame, He\u2019s only a pawn in their game.<\/p>\n
Today, Medgar Evers was buried from the bullet he caught<\/p>\n
They lowered him down as a king, but when the shadowy sun<\/p>\n
sets on the one that fired the gun, he\u2019ll see by his grave<\/p>\n
on the stone that remains, carved next to his name<\/p>\n
his epitaph plain: Only a pawn in their game.<\/p>\n
