2024<\/p>\n<p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">What else and what more needs to be said<\/p>\n<p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">Depends on the amount of whiskey you pour<\/p>\n<p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">It won\u2019t hurt as it rolls around in your head<\/p>\n<p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">Ireland is fondly called by some the Emerald Isle<\/p>\n<p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">It rains a lot there and remains green year round<\/p>\n<p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">Many a red haired lass with Irish eyes that smile<\/p>\n<p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">Shamrocks found growing on the ground abound<\/p>\n<p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">Three stripes orange white and green on the flag<\/p>\n<p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">Woolen clothes horses and potatoes in the fields<\/p>\n<p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">Of independence from England Irishmen brag<\/p>\n<p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">Grains provide ample beer and whiskey yields<\/p>\n<p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">Musicians writers songs dance poetry and verse<\/p>\n<p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">In Gaelic and English one hears blessing and curse.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>A Sonnet for St. Patrick\u2019s Day<\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Green gewgaws appear in variety stores before Valentine\u2019s Day<\/p>\n<p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">Green leprechaun t-shirts shamrock ties and hats sold by the score<\/p>\n<p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">Green beer everywhere a green river even runs in Chicago today<\/p>\n<p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">In New York\u2019s parade Irish pipes policemen marching bands more<\/p>\n<p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">In Erin folks used to get up and go to morning Mass in a local church<\/p>\n<p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">They\u2019d eat a simple meal of pork potatoes tea and Irish soda bread<\/p>\n<p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">Many Irish leave the big green commercial machine in the lurch<\/p>\n<p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">While underneath ladies wool scarves peeks hair of beautiful red<\/p>\n<p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">St. Patrick departed the Emerald Isle over fourteen hundred years ago<\/p>\n<p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">Kidnapped in Scotland and taken as a slave to Erin when a young boy<\/p>\n<p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">After six years he escaped to return in a small boat he could row<\/p>\n<p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">Returning as a priest bringing what became Catholic guilt and joy<\/p>\n<p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">Patrick is now used as an excuse for people to drink booze like a fish<\/p>\n<p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">From green beer to Irish whiskey dear they all wish they were Irish.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>The Old Sot and The Old Sod<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p><em>(an Irish-American reverie by Joey Leahy Connolly)<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If I should pass out think but this of me<\/p>\n<p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">That there\u2019s a small corner of this old pub<\/p>\n<p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">That is forever Ireland and will always be<\/p>\n<p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">A place you can eat some decent grub<\/p>\n<p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">Outside is Ireland the sot dreams aware<\/p>\n<p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">He\u2019s back there in his drunken present state<\/p>\n<p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">Tasting Irish cheddar cheese eating pub fare<\/p>\n<p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">With a dark beer a corned beef cabbage plate<\/p>\n<p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">He\u2019ll have one more pint drink it right away<\/p>\n<p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">A drop or two now of Tullamore Dew no less<\/p>\n<p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">Takes him back to Ireland God may it bless<\/p>\n<p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">Earphones sing harps strings and pipes today<\/p>\n<p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">Uilleann (elbow) pipes and songs by the dozen<\/p>\n<p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">His heart and soul at peace now in Irish sod\u201d is an endearing term used by many Irish when referring to their mother country. I am of Irish-American heritage. My father\u2019s side is from Galway, my mother\u2019s side from Limerick.
