<\/p>\nEach April since 1987, the National Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependence, Inc. has sponsored Alcohol Awareness Month to \u201cincrease public awareness and understanding, reduce stigma and encourage local communities to focus on alcoholism and alcohol related issues.\u201d<\/p>\n
William Oldys, born in 1696 and died April 15, 1761 was an English poet, bibliographer, and antiquarian known to be fastidious in his lifelong task of recording historical data. Biographers of his time state he drank large amounts of alcohol. I have appropriated his rhyme scheme in my poem and pay homage to Nattional Poetry Month and Alcohol Awareness Month.<\/p>\n
Busy, curious, thirsty fly!<\/p>\n
Drink with me and drink as I:<\/p>\n
Freely welcome to my cup,<\/p>\n
Couldst thou sip and sup it up:<\/p>\n
Make the most of life you may,<\/p>\n
Life is short and wears away.<\/p>\n
Both alike are thine and mine<\/p>\n
Hastening quick to their decline:<\/p>\n
Thine\u2019s a summer, mine\u2019s no more,<\/p>\n
Though repeated to threescore.<\/p>\n
Threescore summers when they\u2019re gone<\/p>\n
Will appear as short as one!<\/p>\n
Boozing, serious, thirsty *barfly!<\/p>\n
Drunk like me, here\u2019s mud in your eye:<\/p>\n
Spilling shots from a paper cup,<\/p>\n
Cans and bottles just sucking em up.<\/p>\n
Drinking throughout the rest of the day,<\/p>\n
Your life getting shorter \u2013 wasting away.<\/p>\n
Cheap shots of whisky, beer, and wine<\/p>\n
Hasten us both to a quick decline:<\/p>\n
First we sing, then we\u2019re a bore,<\/p>\n
Round after round, calling out for more.<\/p>\n
Your \u2018happy hour\u2019 has come and gone<\/p>\n
As you pass out on the way back to the john.<\/p>\n
*Barfly is a slang term for a person who<\/p>\n
spends much time drinking in barrooms.<\/p>\n
