Ada Gymnasium.

Pegs claimed their first win after upsetting New Chang Ming, 70-68, last Monday.

In the final seconds, James Kintz sank the tie-breaking layup to hand New Chang Ming their first loss of the season.

The game’s lead teetered between both teams as possession and control waxed and waned throughout. The defensive pressure from the get-go didn’t allow for a high scoring first quarter, but Pegs ruled it, 20-13.

It was a physically contested game and the second quarter saw a lot of fouls, which eventually allowed New Chang Ming to catch up. By the end of the first half, it was a nail-biting game, 38-37 in favor of Pegs.

Kintz and Rannie Hizon then became an unstoppable force in the second half as they took turns at the basket, but New Chang Ming paced them and overtook the lead in some instances. However, Pegs muscled their way through the last quarter with a well-placed Kintz bucket in the last seconds to steal the W.

Kintz, along with his game-winning layup, scored 15 points, while Ryan Bayna scored 12, and Hizon contributed 11. For New Chang Ming, Juan Camacho and Ronald Bernardo put up 10 points each, while Christian David shot 8.

Meanwhile, Bridge Capital earned their third win in as many games over the Saints, 82-74.

Bridge Capital had a commanding presence in the first quarter and quickly left the Saints in their dust, 29-19, from threes and quick drives by Francisco Mizutani and Steve King. But the Saints rose from the ashes in the second quarter and finally got into the groove with more accurate attempts and better ballhandling.

King, however, did what he did best and that was to shoot the ball. He went on a scoring frenzy in the third quarter and when the dust settled, their lead was once again in the double digits, 66-55.

King was assisted throughout by Mizutani and in the end the pair led the team to victory with 33 points and 18 markers, respectively. Matt Duenas joined in the mix and put up 16 of his own. For the Saints, Leo Galarse and L. Rock Reyes teamed up with 14 markers each.

As of April 17 in the standings, Bridge Capital leads with three wins; Team Marianas and Lamesa Kusina are next with two wins; Brothers, Pegs, Akkari Ruuw 2, and New Chang Ming are at 1-1; Saints is 2-1; Akkari Eet 1 and Ol’Aces are at 0-2 each; and Shirley’s are at three losses.

Pegs 70 – Kintz 15, Bayna 12, Hizon 11, Olopai 8, Aycardo 8, Bondad 5, Sy 4, Domine 3, Duque 2, Dominguez 2.

New Chang Ming 68 – Camacho 10, Bernardo 10, David 8, Foronda 7, Diwa 7, Devero 6, Esdrelon 6, Pastrana 5, Ferrer 3, Medina 3, Baking 2, Standish 1.

Scoring by quarters: 20-13, 38-37, 52-55, 70-68.

Bridge Capital 82 – King 33, Mizutani 18, Duenas 16, Richardson 13, Manglona 2.

Saints 74 – Galarse 14, L.
