{"id":408659,"date":"2024-05-07T14:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-05-07T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=408659"},"modified":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"-0001-11-29T14:00:00","slug":"Jury-trial-of-officer-whose-gun-was-used-in-shooting-of-a-minor-begins-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/Jury-trial-of-officer-whose-gun-was-used-in-shooting-of-a-minor-begins-today\/","title":{"rendered":"Jury trial of officer whose gun was used in shooting of a minor begins today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The jury trial of a police officer whose service firearm was allegedly used in the Kagman shooting that saw a minor being shot in the face is set to appear in court today as his jury trial begins.<\/p>\n<p>Raymond Lizama Saralu, the police officer whose service firearm was allegedly used in the Kagman shooting that saw a minor being shot in the face, is set to appear before Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph Camacho today for his jury trial.<\/p>\n<p>Saralu\u2019s trial was initially set for January 2024.<\/p>\n<p>However, because the victim in the case had to undergo extensive surgery, the trial was pushed back.<\/p>\n<p>Saralu, 27, is facing six charges connected to his alleged failure to secure his police firearm properly, which police said resulted in an accidental discharge of the weapon that injured a 7-year-old child on May 21, 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Saralu was also charged with one count of obstructing justice for removing his government-issued firearm, which was allegedly the actual gun used in the shooting, and replacing it with his personal firearm.<\/p>\n<p>Each of the five counts is punishable by a fine of $1,000 and imprisonment of not more than 180 days, or both.<\/p>\n<p>Saralu also faces one count of the storage of firearms involving his government-issued firearm, Glock 19 Gen5 9mm, which caused serious bodily injury to the minor victim.
