{"id":408957,"date":"2024-05-14T14:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-05-14T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=408957"},"modified":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"-0001-11-29T14:00:00","slug":"Senate-confirms-appointment-of-Macaranas-as-DPS-commissioner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/Senate-confirms-appointment-of-Macaranas-as-DPS-commissioner\/","title":{"rendered":"Senate confirms appointment of Macaranas as DPS commissioner"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Senate confirmed yesterday the appointment of retired police officer Anthony Iglecias Macaranas as commissioner of the Department of Public Safety.<\/p>\n<p>Eight senators voted \u201cyes\u201d to approve the Senate Committee on Executive Appointments and Government Investigation report that recommends the confirmation of Macaranas\u2019 appointment.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Celina R. Babauta (D-Saipan), who chairs the committee, was absent, but excused from the session.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Senate also confirmed yesterday the appointment of Chanelle A. Manglona to serve as a member of the Northern Marianas Technical Institute, the appointment of Dr. Martin P. Rohringer to serve as a member of the Health Care Professions Licensing Board, the appointment of Susan R. Babauta to serve as a member of Commonwealth Election Commission, and the re-appointment of Dr. John \u201cJack\u201d Angello to serve as a member of Public Utilities Commission.<\/p>\n<p>Macaranas said in an interview that now that he is confirmed, he could move up with the plans for DPS in regards to the hazardous pay that the officers desperately need, find ways for more training for the officers, and provide the appropriate equipment for them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow I\u2019m [going to] make it happen, that I will try and find ways to help these officers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Last Feb. 13, Gov. Arnold I. Palacios nominated Macaranas to serve as DPS commissioner, a position that he has been occupying in an acting capacity since Jan. 30, 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The DPS post became vacant on Jan. 26, 2024 after the resignation of Clement Bermudes.<\/p>\n<p>Last Jan. 8, Macaranas was named deputy commissioner of the Department of Corrections. He rose through the ranks at DPS. He retired from DPS on Jan. 31, 2022, with the rank of assistant chief of police.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/images\/imgupload\/aaf2b4ee1214d522acd3fb0409f27521.jpg\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><\/p>\n<p>Sen.
