Eric Alan Cooke, a teacher at Saipan International School on Saipan, has been awarded a James Madison Fellow by the James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation of Alexandria, Virginia, in its 23rd annual fellowship competition. A total of 51 fellowships were awarded in 2014. <\/p>\n
James Madison Fellowships support further study of American history by college graduates who aspire to become teachers of American history, American government, and social studies in the nation\u2019s secondary schools, as well as by experienced secondary school teachers of the same subjects.<\/p>\n
Named in honor of the fourth president of the United States and acknowledged \u201cFather of the Constitution and Bill of Rights,\u201d the fellowship will fund up to $24,000 of Cooke\u2019s course of study toward a master\u2019s degree. That program must include a concentration of courses on the history and principles of the United States Constitution.<\/p>\n
Cooke was selected for a James Madison Fellowship in competition with applicants from each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and the nation\u2019s island and trust territories. The fellowship\u2014funded by income from a trust fund in the Treasury of the United States and from additional privates gift, corporate contributions, and foundation grants\u2014requires its recipient to teach American history or social studies in a secondary school for at least one year for each year of fellowship support. The award is intended to recognize promising and distinguished teachers, to strengthen their knowledge of the origins and development of American constitutional government, and thus expose the nation\u2019s secondary school students to accurate knowledge of the nation\u2019s constitutional heritage.<\/p>\n
