{"id":410234,"date":"2024-06-25T14:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-06-25T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=410234"},"modified":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"-0001-11-29T14:00:00","slug":"CNMI-drought-conditions-improving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/CNMI-drought-conditions-improving\/","title":{"rendered":"CNMI drought conditions improving"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After over a month of extreme drought conditions, the CNMI has seen a great deal of improvement and is currently at moderate drought (D1) conditions.<\/p>\n<p>According to an update on drought conditions released by the National Weather Service based off Tiyan, Guam, as of last June 21, Saipan and Tinian are currently at drought condition D1 (or moderate drought), while Rota is currently at D2 drought conditions (or severe drought).<\/p>\n<p>This comes after over a month of being at D3 conditions (or extreme drought).<\/p>\n<p>According to NWS, the CNMI continues to experience dry conditions, however frequency of wildfires has decreased since peak in March-April as there has been periods of increased rainfall due to passing disturbances.<\/p>\n<p>NWS adds that recent reports indicate a return of greener vegetation following some recent showers.<\/p>\n<p>As for weather updates, NWS said satellite and rain gauge data indicated slightly below normal rainfall over the Marianas while across most of Micronesia rainfall has been near to slightly above normal, with drier conditions along and south of the equator.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe slow transition to the summer monsoon pattern has been bringing rain to Yap proper, Ulithi, and Fais. However, until showers become more frequent and sustained, long-term impacts of the drought will continue to take its toll on water levels.
