Arnold I. Palacios and Lt. Gov. David M. Apatang came aboard the USS Rafael Peralta (DDG-115) yesterday after the U.S. Navy Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer dropped anchor at the Port of Saipan in Puerto Rico.

The 509-foot USS Rafael Peralta has a crew of 330 and she arrived on Saipan last June 18.

“So, our visit here is just part of a routine port visit. Our ship is stationed out of Ishigaki, Japan and we operate in the Western Pacific in the southern Fleet area of responsibility. We routinely patrol all the waters of the Western Pacific and while we’re out on patrol, we routinely pull in the ports of opportunity for rest and relaxation and also to resupply fuel and food,” said USS Rafael Peralta Commanding Officer Cmdr. Stephen Szachta

The USS Rafael Peralta crew hosted a tour for Palacios, Aparang, and members of the media. Visitors were guided through the ship by subject matter experts who explained how the crew safely operates and navigates the vessel.

During the tour, when a canteen was shown, a question was asked if they never ran out of food. “Oh, so we generally try to take anywhere between 30 and 45 days’ worth of food when we’re out, just gets us flexibility, how often we can stay out so what we try to do is every time we pull into a port, we’re trying to get food and gas pouring that the navy also has what we call underweight replenishments,” said USS Rafael Peralta Executive Officer Cmdr. Cam Massey.

The USS Rafael Peralta is expected to depart tomorrow morning.

USS Rafael Peralta is an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer in the United States Navy. The destroyer can operate with a Carrier Strike Group, Expeditionary Strike Group, as an element of a Surface Action Group, or independently. The ship can conduct a variety of missions in support of national military strategy. From peacetime presence and crisis management to sea control and power projection, 115 will be capable of carrying out Integrated Air and Missile Defense, Undersea Warfare, Surface Warfare, and Strike Warfare in multi-threat environments.

The U.S. Navy Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer USS Rafael Peralta (DDG-115) arrived at the Port of Saipan last June 18.

-RACQUEL FLOYD

Gov.
