{"id":411287,"date":"2024-07-30T14:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-07-30T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=411287"},"modified":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"-0001-11-29T14:00:00","slug":"MTEC-MVA-teach-hospitality-tourism-to-summer-camp-kids","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/MTEC-MVA-teach-hospitality-tourism-to-summer-camp-kids\/","title":{"rendered":"MTEC, MVA teach hospitality, tourism to summer camp kids"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>School\u2019s out, but the teaching continues for the Marianas Tourism Education Council and Marianas Visitors Authority, who took their presentations about tourism and hospitality to summer camp last Wednesday, July 24.<\/p>\n<p>With a diverse lineup of activities, the MTEC\/MVA team shared the message that \u201cTourism is Everybody\u2019s Business\u201d with nearly 70 children ages 5-12 at the Division of Youth Services\u2019 Youth Empowerment Summer Camp.<\/p>\n<p>With uke in hand, musician and MTEC board member Larry Lee led students in learning the \u201cHafa Adai\u201d welcome song. Dance instructors Leilani and Bina Marciano took it a step further by teaching the accompanying \u201cHafa Adai\u201d dance, with students quickly picking up the coconut-shell clicking routine.<\/p>\n<p>Under the tents outdoors, banana print artist Brian Ruben conducted a follow-along tutorial, guiding the creation of numerous crabs and other designs. April Repeki and Nicole Tyquiengco of the dance troupe Simiyan Marianas taught coconut-frond weaving, helping the students weaving fish, hearts, and more, which they proudly displayed throughout the afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>At another station, students imagined being either visitors or hospitable locals, waving their country flags and \u201criding an airplane\u201d from Korea or Japan, having an \u201cairport welcome\u201d with shells leis and island maps, taking a \u201cbus tour\u201d with videos produced by the MVA to various scenic sites, \u201csuiting up\u201d with snorkels and fins for diving at Grotto and other sites, and enjoying one the most common culture practices in the Marianas\u2014sharing food. Chamorro cookies, to be exact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe MTEC is grateful to the Division of Youth Services, especially Ms. Anna Rangamar, for inviting us to participate in the Summer Camp,\u201d said MTEC chairwoman Vicky Benavente. \u201cOur young participants were treated to a typical tourist\u2019s experience in the Marianas. They had fun and they learned a lot from the local artists and musicians.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The outreach was strongly supported by cultural practitioners provided through Pacific Development, Inc., Simiyan Marianas, and Chamolinian Cultural Village Inc.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is important to preserve, promote, and perpetuate our indigenous Chamorro and Refaluwasch culture for our future generation,\u201d said PDI co-owner and MTEC board member Gordon Marciano. \u201cOur \u201ckutura,\u2019 \u2018kkosch\u2019 (culture) Chamorro yan Refaluwasch connects us all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MTEC is a non-profit organization whose mission is to foster and improve community understanding of the visitor industry; to educate the general public, especially school students, about the value, social benefits, and economic contributions made to the community by the visitor industry; and to instill, improve and promote the \u201cHafa Adai Tirow\u201d hospitality spirit throughout the community. <em><strong><em>(PR)<\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p> <figure style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/images\/imgupload\/3d07b403d1d9ecac2abb59e07285f2ab.jpg\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><\/p>\n<p>Children and staff at the Division of Youth Services Youth Empowerment Summer Camp learn about tourism and hospitality from the Marianas Tourism Education Council and Marianas Visitors Authority on July 24, 2024, in Koblerville, Saipan.
