Calvo, who co-owns the restaurant with Deborah G. Ladringan, said wishing to make a name for themselves and the lack of tourists led them to start a lunch buffet.

“The low number of tourists coming into the CNMI and the slow economy made us decide to start a lunch buffet at a very affordable price of only $11.99. We are very unique because our lunch buffet offers a variety of authentic Korean, Lao, Thai, as well as authentic Filipino dishes,” she said.

The 90-seat Dae Jang Kum Restaurant has a revolving lunch buffet that includes appetizers, several main dishes, fruits, soup, and drinks.

“We are thankful to our customers because they are helpful in spreading word of our lunch buffet to their families and friends,” said Calvo,

Dae Jang Kum Restaurant’s lunch buffet is also very convenient to those who take late lunches as it’s from 11am to 3pm, Monday-Sunday.

As for diving head first into the restaurant industry despite the current economic morass of the CNMI, Calvo said she has fate in their abilities and the kind of food they offer.

“This restaurant is eight years old. We acquired it March 26, 2024. You will never know when opportunity knocks. I believe it’s the right time. I believe in our capabilities. I believe in my business partners. We all are working hard to make this restaurant stronger than ever. I also believe this restaurant has big potential for locals and the tourist industry. I also decided to be an entrepreneur because I now have all the freedom I need. I don’t have too many bosses anymore,” said the Castillejos, Zambales in the Philippines native.

Aside from the lunch buffet, Calvo also wants customers to try Dae Jang Kum Restaurant’s Unlimited Korean Pork BBQ Set. It’s only $25 per customer and comes with unlimited banchan and served with enoki mushrooms, lettuce, shrimp or mussels, and rice plus one free cocktail drink.

Bestsellers in their ala carte menu include fresh sashimi tuna, black bean sauce noodles, cabbage hangover soup, YangNyeom chicken wings, soy fried chicken, galbi jjim, samgyeopsal Korean BBQ, pad Thai, fried spring rolls, and beef caldereta

Dae Jang Kum Restaurant, located at the Joeten Building right across Saipan World Resort, is open from 10am to 9pm every day.
