{"id":412344,"date":"2024-08-30T14:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-08-30T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=412344"},"modified":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"-0001-11-29T14:00:00","slug":"Marianas-joins-Nippon-Domannaka-Festival-in-Nagoya-Japan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/Marianas-joins-Nippon-Domannaka-Festival-in-Nagoya-Japan\/","title":{"rendered":"Marianas joins Nippon Domannaka Festival in Nagoya, Japan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Marianas participated in the 26th Annual Nippon Domannaka Festival in Nagoya, Japan on Aug. 23-25, 2024, performing indigenous Carolinian and Chamorro dances for nearly 2 million enthusiastic viewers at the event and around the world.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s festival featured 202 groups and over 20,000 dancers from throughout Japan, with a few special international performances, including the Marianas. Nippon Domannaka Festival\u2014or Domatsuri, for short\u2014is the largest dance festival in central Japan and is held in late summer.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s Marianas delegation was sent by the Marianas Visitors Authority, with further organization and supported by Pacific Development Inc., Chamolinian Cultural Village Inc., honorary Marianas tourism ambassador Kyoko Nakayama and several members of her dance group \u201cGuma\u2019 Famagu\u2019on Tano\u2019 yan i Tasi\u201d (House of the Children of Land and Sea), honorary Marianas tourism ambassador Yoichi Matsumura, and Marianas residents now living in Japan, including Mike Saures and family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile a group of fairly well-trained professionals or semi-professionals competed in their own performance skills, The Marianas team\u2014as an overseas guest performer\u2014captivated the audience with our calm and refreshing performance,\u201d said Nakayama. \u201cSome of the audience members who come to see the event every year are familiar with The Marianas team and said, \u2018We\u2019ve been waiting for you!\u2019 The Marianas team has been a beloved part of the festival for years, and group leader Gordon Marciano\u2019s shouts and the dancers\u2019 dance moves kept the crowd entertained.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The group sported a coconut leaf-themed uniform T-shirt that also garnered interest and inquiries as they moved throughout the city.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Marianas Visitors Authority is so grateful to Gordon, the PDI team, and the local dancers who bring the spirit of our islands to the streets of Nagoya every year at this huge event\u2014Nippon Domannaka festival,\u201d said MVA managing director Christopher A. Concepcion. \u201cAs one of only a few dance groups from outside Japan, it\u2019s a great opportunity to grow brand awareness for the Marianas.
