The purpose of the smoke test is to locate leaks, breaks, and illegal connections in CUC’s sewer system.

About the smoke test

A smoke test is a sewer inspection method whereby nontoxic smoke is forced into sewer system access points. The smoke travels through all connected pipes in the sewer system, indicating pipe leaks, breached utility holes, cracks, uncapped lines, and other defects.

Testers can also locate unknown pipe sections, such as cleanouts, downspouts, and sump pumps.

The smoke is nontoxic, nonhazardous, and is manufactured specifically for this purpose. It leaves no residue or stains and has no effects on plants or animals. The smoke is not expected to enter your home; however, if it does, it will have a distinct odor and should clear out within a few minutes with proper ventilation. Please be advised that all plumbing fixture drain traps must be filled with water before the test.

To ensure the safety of our CUC crew, certain roadways will be closed during the testing period to allow the Wastewater crew to access the manholes. Motorists are advised to reduce speed and exercise caution while driving in the area or take alternative routes.

CUC appreciates the public’s cooperation and understanding in helping identify customer connections. We aim to conduct these tests efficiently while minimizing disruption to customers’ daily activities. By proactively engaging in this testing, CUC reaffirms its commitment to providing reliable wastewater services for the community.

For more information, contact our hotline at (670) 236-4333, visit CUC’s website, and monitor its Facebook page for the latest updates.
