{"id":412741,"date":"2024-08-28T14:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-08-28T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=412741"},"modified":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"-0001-11-29T14:00:00","slug":"Spike-in-gas-theft-incidents-prompts-public-safety-alert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/Spike-in-gas-theft-incidents-prompts-public-safety-alert\/","title":{"rendered":"Spike in gas theft incidents prompts public safety alert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Department of Public Safety has issued a public warning following a significant rise in gas theft incidents across Saipan, primarily targeting 15-seater passenger vans.<\/p>\n<p>According to DPS, as of Monday, they confirmed that within the week of Aug. 18-24, 2024, DPS received eight complaints involving the theft of fuel from multiple vehicles, raising concerns among the local community and businesses.<\/p>\n<p>Assistant chief of police and acting public information officer Simon T. Manacop shared that the perpetrators have stolen fuel, either by puncturing gas tanks or by cutting the hoses connecting to the tanks and siphoning out the fuel using another hose. The incidents have been reported in various locations, including Capitol Hill, Garapan, Chalan Lau Lau, Susupe, and Chalan Kanoa. With the crimes occurring during late-night hours, between 9pm and 4am.<\/p>\n<p>Manacop highlighted the ongoing investigation into these thefts and urged the public to take extra security measures. \u201cWe ask the community and businesses with passenger vans to increase vigilance and implement additional security protocols to safeguard their vehicles,\u201d Manacop stated.<\/p>\n<p>Residents and business owners have expressed growing concerns about the frequency and boldness of these crimes. \u201cIt\u2019s sad to see this happening,\u201d said one local business owner who requested anonymity.<\/p>\n<p>He shared with <em>Saipan Tribune<\/em> that he had been targeted twice with thieves stealing over $100 of gas in one shot. \u201cAnd it\u2019s not just me. I have met other business owners who have shared that they too have experienced this type of theft. I think it\u2019s important to inform the community about these incidents so we can be more aware and on guard,\u201d he shared<\/p>\n<p>DPS is asking anyone with information related to these incidents to share what they know.
