She describes how the government can set up its management framework for protected areas. “Co-management is a pathway for shared stewardship with Indigenous communities. The Biden administration can follow the call from Indigenous leaders to create a co-management plan for the PRI.”

The PRI Coalition, a network of elders, fishers, cultural practitioners, navigators, scientists, nonprofit leaders, and storytellers from across Oceania, who have worked together for the last decade to protect the rich ecosystem and heritage of the region.

The Pacific Remote Islands include Howland, Baker, Jarvis, and Wake Islands; Johnston and Palmyra atolls; and Kingman Reef. They lie between Hawaiʻi, the Marianas, the Marshall Islands, and Kiribati in the Central Pacific.

They are home to some of the last wild ocean ecosystems on Earth. The islands and atolls hold deep historical significance for Marshallese, Hawaiians, Chamorros, and other Pacific Islanders.

Swaddell includes examples of the current administration working toward this through co-management structures set up with Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument of the western Hawaii archipelago and the Bears Ears National Monument in Utah.

“By designating a national marine sanctuary at the PRI, the largest marine protected area in the world, the United States can continue to set a global example of partnering with Indigenous communities to conserve precious natural and cultural resources,” Swaddell states.

Pacific Remote Islands have long held significance for Native Pacific Islanders’ cross-oceanic migration, voyaging and cultural practice and depend on healthy ecosystems with intact biological indicators. The heritage of the Pacific people is inextricably linked to the vitality of the ocean.

In her article, Swaddell articulates a hopeful vision for a partnership between the U.S. government and Indigenous Pacific Island communities—one in which Pacific Islanders from the U.S. territories are not only respected and listened to but also collaboratively leading stewardship decisions. Swaddell will speak at a panel hosted by Patagonia during Climate Week NYC to discuss opportunities to elevate Pacific Islander voices and fully protect the shared natural and cultural heritage of the Pacific Remote Islands.

Read the full article at: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/pacific-islanders-steering-ocean-conservation-lauren-swaddell-c1p4e/

About the Pacific Remote Islands Coalition

Since 2014, the Pacific Remote Islands Coalition has worked to protect the cultural, natural and historical legacy of these special islands, atolls and reefs.
