{"id":413675,"date":"2024-09-26T14:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-09-26T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=413675"},"modified":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"-0001-11-29T14:00:00","slug":"China-test-fires-intercontinental-ballistic-missile-into-Pacific-Ocean","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/China-test-fires-intercontinental-ballistic-missile-into-Pacific-Ocean\/","title":{"rendered":"China test-fires intercontinental  ballistic missile into Pacific Ocean"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>TAIPEI (AP)\u2014<\/strong>China test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile into the Pacific Ocean on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The ICBM carried a dummy warhead and fell into a designated area of the sea, the Defense Ministry said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The launch by the People\u2019s Liberation Army was part of routine annual training.<\/p>\n<p>It said the launch complied with international law and was not directed against any country or target.<\/p>\n<p>It is unclear how often China conducts tests over such a distance. In 1980, China launched an ICBM into the South Pacific.<\/p>\n<p>A map published in Chinese newspapers at the time showed the target area as roughly a circle in the center of a ring formed by the Solomon Islands, Nauru, the Gilbert Islands, Tuvalu, western Samoa, Fiji and the New Hebrides.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. and non-governmental organizations have said China has been building up its missile silos, but it\u2019s unclear how many missiles and nuclear warheads it has added to its arsenal.<\/p>\n<p>The People\u2019s Liberation Army, which functions as the ruling Communist Party\u2019s military wing, runs China\u2019s space program, which has established an orbital station and has ambitions to set up a Moon base and land a spacecraft on Mars.<\/p>\n<p>Rocketry has long been part of China\u2019s development into a major global power, spurring nationalism and growth that has made China the world\u2019s second-largest economy.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. remains China\u2019s main global rival, although Japan, Taiwan, the Philippines and others have territorial disputes with Beijing that occasionally threaten to develop into military clashes.<\/p>\n<p>China maintains a \u201cno first use\u201d of nuclear weapons policy, even as its desire for regional predominance grows.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/images\/imgupload\/eff73c3f7a7dcd1fa612340d8695859a.jpg\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><\/p>\n<p>Spectators wave Chinese flags as military vehicles carrying DF-41 nuclear ballistic missiles roll during a parade to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the founding of Communist China in Beijing on Oct. 1, 2019.<\/p>\n<p>-AP<br \/><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TAIPEI (AP)\u2014China test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile into the Pacific Ocean on Wednesday.
