{"id":41428,"date":"2014-07-15T04:00:07","date_gmt":"2014-07-14T18:00:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=41428"},"modified":"2014-07-15T04:00:07","modified_gmt":"2014-07-14T18:00:07","slug":"guams-main-thoroughfare-reopened-renovation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/guams-main-thoroughfare-reopened-renovation\/","title":{"rendered":"Guam\u2019s main thoroughfare reopened after renovation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>HAGATNA, Guam<\/strong>\u2014Representatives from the U.S. Navy joined members of the Guam community to officially open the island\u2019s reconstructed main thoroughfare during a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Hagatna on July 9.<\/p>\n<p>The $16.4-million project, which was 100-percent federally funded, was the result of a 2008 study of Guam\u2019s specific routes that would be utilized during the Marine Corps relocation from Okinawa to Guam.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_41436\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41436\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Guam-main-road.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-41436\" alt=\"Representatives from the military and local communities cut the ceremonial ribbon for the Route 1\/8 Intersection and Agana Bridge Reconstruction Projects in Hagatna, Guam on July 9. (U.S. Navy\/Joanna Delfin)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThough the buildup has not yet begun in earnest, the bridge and the intersection are now complete,\u201d said Rear Adm. Tilghman Payne, commander, Joint Region Marianas. \u201cIt\u2019s truly a worthwhile investment that will not only benefit those who will be traveling along these roads today and in the near future, but for generations to come. It\u2019s better for the people of Guam, it\u2019s better for the infrastructure of Guam and it\u2019s better for the military to conduct the mission that we need to do here in Guam.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Infrastructure improvements included the removal and replacement of the six-lane bridge over the Agana River in the capital city of Hagatna and the addition of new lanes linking the two roads for motorists traversing to the southern end of the island.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was the Department of Defense\u2019s work on outside-the-fence contracts,\u201d said Guam Gov.
