The bond between a police officer and their canine is unparalleled and unbreakable. Built on trust, loyalty, and love, this partnership is a testament to the bravery and devotion of both humans and animals. Their partnership transcends mere colleagues, it’s a deep-seated familial tie. A bond that extends far beyond duty hours, with canines often becoming integral members of the officers’ families,” he said during a media conference yesterday at DPS headquarters in Susupe.

Macaranas added that the death of the K-9 officers also hit their handlers hard and that they don’t deserve the criticism from the public they’re currently receiving.

“The loss of a canine partner is a devastating blow, leaving an unfillable void, most especially for their handlers. We must acknowledge that the death of our canines had also deeply affected our officers. Between the criticisms the officers would face and being convicted by public opinion, DPS and its command staff acknowledges the well-being of our officers, who had lost a family member.”

To this end, the police commissioner said available help was extended to the K-9 handlers.

“Immediate peer support, counseling, and time for grief was afforded, to include access to professional mental health services. Our commitment to officer well-being is unwavering, acknowledging the lasting impact of losing a partner and friend. We recognize and honor this extraordinary relationship, acknowledging the sacrifices made by both officers and canines in service to their community.”

Macaranas also said that police investigation on the case continues, despite the handlers still in mourning.

“As commissioner of Public Safety, I have always stand for transparency. In light of what had transpired on Sept. 8, 2024, an investigation into the tragic death of our canines is being conducted, with our department following strict protocols to ensure a thorough and unbiased inquiry. Our top priority is uncovering the facts surrounding this loss. Additionally, procedures and protocols are under review to identify potential improvements. We appreciate public understanding and patience during this difficult time. We also appreciate the community’s empathy and understanding, acknowledging the invaluable contributions of our canine heroes.”

Last Sept. 8, Beni and Boss succumbed to heat exhaustion after the air-conditioning unit inside the car they were left in by their handlers failed. DPS then held a small private burial ceremony for them last Friday.

Anthony I.
