MAGA: Meaning and a modicum of mirth<\/strong><\/p>\n

From a Siegfried Sassoon online site article titled, \u201cWhat does MAGA stand for? \u201cA political belief related to crypto-fascism that supports nation and race above individual freedom, the use of lies and wedge issues to control low information citizens, rejects democracy and instead seeks to create an autocracy headed by a dictatorial autocratic leader, employs the violent suppression of opposition parties, and is controlled by foreign powers who maintain a financial or blackmail relationship with the leaders of the movement.<\/p>\n

Based on the acronym for Make America Great Again, the slogan had no serious association with fascism until it was adopted by Christine O\u2019Donnell for her unsuccessful 2010 effort to gain the Senate seat vacated by Joe Biden. In 2011 she used the term to support her pro-fascism treatise \u201cTroublemaker: Let\u2019s Do What It Takes to Make America Great Again.\u201d Donald Trump\u2019s political handlers fed the line \u201cMake America Great Again\u201d for a speech in December of 2011, lifting it from O\u2019Donnell\u2019s unsuccessful book. It remained in the background of the Trump media efforts to position him for president, but in 2015 was adopted and registered, being used as a sample of reversing the narrative typical for American campaigns to define traditional personal freedom as evil, multiculturalism, and pluralism as damaging America\u2019s white Christian image, and associating the massive advance in American standard of living (1950 to 2010) with unwanted change, often advocating a return to an America of 1855. Shortly after it was adopted, Russian-based troll farms, seeking to break America\u2019s collective will, began to support the saying, followed quickly by fascist news groups and finally the Trump campaign\u2019s increasing use of the term as a stand in for increasing violence.\u201d<\/p>\n
