Get ready to enter the world of Frank Herbert\u2019s Dune<\/a><\/em>\u201410,000 years before<\/em> the ascension of Paul Atreides (played by Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet<\/a> in the Denis Villeneuve-directed movie that debuted in 2021). The stunning HBO series follows the life of two Harkonnen sisters (Emily Watson<\/a> and Olivia Williams<\/a>) as they fight forces that threaten their future\u2026all while establishing the sect that will later become the Bene Gesserit (a group of women with superhuman abilities who can influence various governments in the galaxy).<\/p>\n

When TV Insider sat down to talk with the Dune: Prophecy<\/em><\/a>\u00a0cast and writers at New York Comic Con<\/a> last month, they were more than aware of the legacy that they were stepping into\u2014but well prepared to tackle it.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe call ourselves 10,000 B.C. \u2014 before Chalamet,\u201d jokes Emily Watson<\/a>, who plays Mother Superior\u00a0Valya Harkonnen. \u201cAs an actor, it\u2019s a gift, this world\u2026morally very, very complicated and everyone\u2019s really messed up. But we\u2019re playing with trying to control the universe.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s something that feels like a huge responsibility,\u201d says Williams, who plays Valya\u2019s sister Tula Harkonnen, of stepping into a world beloved over generations, thanks to the movie and also the original novel (this particular show is inspired by the book Sisterhood of Dune<\/em> by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson).<\/p>\n

According to showrunner Alison Schapker<\/a>, working within such a vast and well-known universe allowed the show to have the best of both worlds. \u201cOn the one hand, we\u2019re very much rooted in the Sisterhood of Dune<\/em> trilogy, and that\u2019s going to set up all the text for us,\u201d she explains. \u201cBut we\u2019re also telling a story that takes place over decades\u2026some of the story we\u2019re telling is based outside the book, where we\u2019ve had the opportunity to work with the Dune<\/em> estate and contribute to the mythology.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alongside Williams and Watson, the show includes a mix of heavy hitters and newer faces, including Jodhi May<\/a>, Sarah-Sofie Boussnina<\/a>, Shalom Brune-Franklin<\/a>, Faoileann Cunningham<\/a>, Jessica Barden<\/a>, Aoife Hinds<\/a>, Chloe Lea<\/a>, Jade Anouka<\/a>, Chris Mason<\/a>, Mark Strong<\/a> as political leader Emperor Corrino, and Travis Fimmel<\/a> as Desmond Hart, an Arrakis-based mysterious and charismatic soldier. For Fimmel, who spent the past few years in medieval times as Ragnar Lothbrok in History\u2019s Vikings<\/em><\/a>, having fights in space isn\u2019t very different from swinging axes on a battlefield.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s very similar,\u201d laughs Fimmel. \u201cIt\u2019s about family, it\u2019s about trying to achieve what you want no matter what. Every character is so complex and every character thinks they\u2019re right.\u201d<\/p>\n
