She was 98.<\/p>\n<p>Her passing was confirmed by Edith Meeks, executive and artistic director at New York\u2019s Herbert Berghof Studio, who told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/obituaries\/2024\/11\/26\/helen-gallagher-broadway-musicals-dies\/\"><em>The Washington Post<\/em><\/a> that Gallagher died on Sunday (November 24) at a hospital in Manhattan, New York. Gallagher taught a \u201cSinging for the Musical Theater\u201d class at the studio for many years.<\/p>\n<p>Born on July 19, 1926, in New York City, Gallagher first made her mark as a Broadway performer, appearing in productions such as <em>Make a Wish, Hazel Flagg, Portofino, High Button Shoes<\/em>, and <em>Sweet Charity<\/em>, for which she received a 1967 Tony Award nomination for Featured Actress.<\/p>\n<p>She won her first Tony Award in 1952 for her performance in the revival of <em>Pal Joey<\/em> and earned her second Tony in 1971 for her role in the revival of the musical <em>No, No, Nanette.<\/em> She also performed at the 1971 and 1972 Tony Awards telecasts alongside her <em>No, No, Nanette<\/em> castmate, Bobby Van.<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_1164188\" style=\"width: 994px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1164188\" class=\"wp-image-1164188 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/helen-gallagher-2-984x570.jpg\" alt=\"Helen Gallagher interview\" width=\"984\" height=\"570\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/helen-gallagher-2-984x570.jpg 984w, https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/helen-gallagher-2-450x261.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/helen-gallagher-2-768x445.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/helen-gallagher-2-570x330.jpg 570w, https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/helen-gallagher-2-1014x587.jpg 1014w, https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/helen-gallagher-2.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 984px) 100vw, 984px\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-1164188\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">MagdaCorrespondent YouTube<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Despite her long history on Broadway, many know Gallagher best for her role as the Irish matriarch Maeve Ryan on ABC\u2019s <em>Ryan\u2019s Hope<\/em>. There were plenty of times when it was boring, but as a rule, it was really interesting \u2014 the people were centered and had work to do. It wasn\u2019t just a matter of sitting around on couches talking about your emotional problems. There was a life going on in that place, maybe because it was centered on a bar. It was just magic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After <em>Ryan\u2019s Hope<\/em> was canceled in 1989, Gallagher went on to guest star in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/show\/another-world\/\"><em>Another World<\/em><\/a> and also appeared in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/show\/all-my-children\/\"><em>All My Children<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/show\/one-life-to-live\/\"><em>One Life to Live<\/em><\/a>.
